Ok, we finally broke out the outdoor fire pit last night after admiring it long enough in the box.

Question for you fire bugs out there, what's the best wood to burn to have the least amount of smoke?

Anything dry will burn quite cleanly. But who cares you're outdoors!

When you buy firewood by the load, its usually either oak or maple or a mix. Oak burns slower but has more heat.

Chad,

Some good hardwood that you might not know about is pallet wood. Most pallets are made of oak. They burn really good. Find some place that sells them, pull them apart and burn on dude. Also I know you have some fruit trees out your way. Fruit tree wood is very dense and burns slow and puts off nice colors. If all else fails I have attached a website I found.

Cheers,

Mike

You probably know this but the green pressure treated wood contains arsenic and copper, and you should never burn scrap like that, especially if you're having a bbq!

Pallets are not treated lumber! They are plain dry oak! Just make sure they are clean. But Dean is right, don't burn pressure treated wood like you use to build decks etc.

The newer pallets are treated if they are used in international trade in order to prevent the introduction alien organizims into non native enviroments. This is a big deal in the shipping industry as it realates to all dunnage. Thats part of the reason you are starting to see all of these plastic pallets and less manilla/ cotton line. If they are these type of pallets they will be marked since customs is unable to tell the diffrence otherwise.

They all have to be marked by law if they are to be used including the wood pallets. wood pallets can still be used so there is a mix of treated wood pallets and untreated wood pallets on the docks. Sorry for the confusion.

Chad,
I buy pinion from some firewood guy (Berry Brothers I think) by the airport. Burns good and smells nice. I have also burned citrus and liked it. Are you going on the Salt River Canyon trip on the 21st????
