I'm going camping/ fishing this weekend. I am trying to figure out how to carry my poles. I was thinking of strapping them under the rack above the roof. Has anyone ever done this before?

Why wouldn't you put them IN the truck?
Fishing POLES get strapped to the roof. Fishing RODS go inside the truck. If you have to ask the difference then you have poles. ;)
Place the butt of the rods by the passengers feet. Tips go back toward the middle of the rear seat.
If you just simply can't put them inside the truck then do this.
Go to your hardware store and get a length of 4" PVC, a cap, a slip to threaded adapter, and a screw in plug. Make yourself a rod tube and strap that to your roof. Put the rods in a rod sock before placing them in the tube though.

I assumed I was going to have to do something like that. I don't want them inside because I will be traveling with two big dogs that are guaranteed to break something or get tangled in the line.

What kind of Poles do you have? If they are cheap $15.00 Wal-mart specials give it a try. If the are good quality rods I would not recommend it.

Are they 2 piece 1 piece how long ect.ect. More details.

I went and bought some of those cheap rod holders from wal mart that you mount on the deck of your bass boat and mounted them to some pieces of 1x4s. Tip end got mounted and has hooks that hang on the rear seat oh shit handles. The butt end piece of wood, I cut just to fit so it would rest on the indention formed by the alpine windows (plastic) and I covered the ends with some foam and felt so it would be snug but not put pressure on the windows themselves. I don't have a picture but it wasn't hard and cost about 10 bucks. I haven't "wheeled" with them in there but some of the places I have driven while using them have had roads.

There is a really good thread on here where someone made up there own that used the mounting screw for the rear oh shit handle and then something else that mounted up by the alpine windows that was a really nice setup.
