No, I'm not talking about Miami football......

Didn't think to do it w/ Charley, but with Frances now bearing down on you folks, thought I'd take a second to ask how it's going down that way.... hope you've got the hatches all battened down, and have taken care to get out of harm's way......

I am worried a bit as well. I have family there and I know of @ least 5 members on this board who live right in the eye of the storm. You guys be safe down there!

Here in Jacksonville, we are "Cautiously Optimistic" City offices are open still, although we've begun the process of locking things down just in case. I've got another 12 hour shift in the Emergency Operations Center starting tonight at 6, but luckily at this point, we're just in prep-mode. Running damage models and stuff. Estimating the population within certain flood zones etc...

We feel good, but we're not off the hook yet, and no matter where in Florida this pig comes ashore, some of us from Jax will be assigned to help with damage assessments in other parts of the state.

Thanks for asking, and I say good luck to all of us. Looks like we'll get a test of the new State-wide Building Code!

I am currently in the city's EOC and we are doing cartwheels. Still guarded, but feeling some relief. Now if we can just get some of our gas to our friends down south!

Good luck Indian River/Vero!

Now you've got Ivan heading toward you!

We all think it is God's way of reminding you not to screw up this election like you did last time!!!

Seriously, be safe. I hope everyone makes out well.

Back at work, cleanup starts. The city is a mess with trees down all over the place. We have upwards of 500 streets blocked by fallen trees so just geting around is a chore. Last night we had a string of tornados across the area. No deaths in Jax that I know of, but some of our Super Bowl preparations are going to be behind schedule! :D

The worst part about this pig was the speed! The thing moved so slowly that the winds never really abated so what wouldn't have been damaged by wind was, and what wasn't damaged is underwater!

lets hope SE Fla is doing ok, they got the worst of it.

Our state is a mess! Everyone seems stunned and in shock!

My area made it through Charley - not a bit of bad weather. This was a surprise since we were originally targeted for a direct hit.

I've been going back and forth from Ft Ogden using my rover in disaster recovery and relief. You can't imagine how bad it is down there. Total infrastructure went down.

Everyone helping down south got pulled out of the area 2 days before Francis was expected. Although I understand the need to pull all teams out to a safe area so that everyone could go back out in the field to assist after hurricane #2 - it was heartbreaking. I cried about this because those down south are dependent on relief agencies for food, water, and shelter. So many homes totally blown apart. Still so many without electricity and water.

Francis got the entire state and did a thorough job of destruction everywhere. I was home for the duration of Francis and thankfully had no major damage. Power was restored late last night. Clean up from trees and yard debris here (Tampa Bay area) will take a few days.

I will be heading out to help in another area of the state as soon as I know where I am needed most and a plan is in place to make sure that our relief vehicles can get fuel while we're assisting.

I've lived here forever and have gone through a few hurricanes. I never feared them until I saw the devastation up close after Charley. High tides and flooding rivers are continuing to force many people out of their homes. This is a direct result of Francis and is expected to get worse before it gets better (has something to do with rivers cresting I think).

To top everything else off, there was also a major environmental spill at a phosphate fertilizer plant.

The most positive thing I can say is that I'm thankful to be driving my rover and have been able to access areas to provide assistance when other vehicles couldn't get through.

I have decided that the most beautiful sight in the world is a long line of power trucks staging to help. They're traveling in heards of 10-20 trucks. Those guys are awesome, they've been coming in from all over the country, working long hours, and sleeping in their trucks.

I hope some more people from Florida will post here so we know they are ok. There are still statewide power outages and cable is out in many areas which is restricting internet access for many people. All services are being restored on a priority basis.

If any of you out there need help, please email me at bluevelt@aol.com. We'll do our very best to get help out to you. I'll continue trying to check my email at least once per day. Communication has been tricky - cellular service has been a nightmare in the areas hardest hit.

Thanks, Jamie

Jamie,
I'm so glad you are OK. I almost IM-ed the other day, but you were away.

My parents live on the Gulf Coast of MS and have lived through many, many hurricanes. They survived Camille in 1969, when many others didn't, and they describe the situation as devastating and beyond expression. I have been thinking so much about the people in Florida. Any help you can give is fantastic.
I have family in Pensacola and Sarasota, and luckily they were all spared the worst. After Hurrican Isabel last year, I traveled to the coast of VA and saw first hand what those rescue and service guys go through! There were trucks from MS that have driven up here and stayed for months.

Please be safe and I wish you all the best in re-building and cleaning.

Unfortunately, Ivan does look like it's headed your way. (my husband is going to be in a lot of trouble!) Good luck and let us know if we can send anything to help.

Just please be SAFE guys!! And do keep us abreast of your well being. This all so ironic, I interviewed with a firm in West Palm Beach (a few weeks ago) ..I guess I will no longer be moving to FLA after all. :(
Take Care, Melissa N
