The cooking surface is designed in a way not to allow fats and juices to drip onto the charcoal.

I thought this was the whole purpose of using charcoal. I mean if you don't get the flame kissed smoky flavor you could just use gas.

I haven't used it yet, but my guess is that not having the flare ups would be an advantage in a portable grill. You could use a smoker box or foil packet with wood chips for flavor.
