So, '96 D1--this one is a stocker

Under quick/hard acceleration (from a standstill), I feel and hear a noise coming from directly under my feet. It's as if someting is shifting into place, almost a click, but loud enough to be a clunk.

There's nothing under there obviously out of place--- although my tie rod bushings are hurtin' pretty bad; could the worn bushings allow the rod to shift back and forth in place?

The location would suggest something with the Cats, but they're good as far as I can tell, and it's definitely not the marble-in-a-cup sound indicative of bad cats..

I recently replaced my rotary flex with a Ujoint, but that looks okay, and I really do think it's coming from right under the driver's floorboard.

Again, it's not always obvious... only comes when accelerating from a full stop. I'm worried I'm putting torque on a bent component, but for the life of me I can't detect anything.

I nutted my bumper pretty nicely on a recent trip, and I had to cut away part of the left-front end cap. Possibly there's some play there, but I'm positive it's coming from underneath me.

Oh, good call.

I remember last time I was doing an oil change.. I noticed what I thought was a superficial crack on the exterior of the motor mount.

Guess I forgot about that. Yikes.

Any idea what that would entail? a DIY job, or what?

very easy DIY job, but verify it's bad before you spend the money.
Land rover is notorious for shitty rubber (must be Indian or something of the like)
the rubber will often split on the outside, but will still be fine on the inside.

again, verify its bad first.
pry bars, levers or lay under it and have a trusted partner rev the motor up with the brakes on. if it's a mount, you'll see the motor jump right at ya.

but that was just a guess, could be other things too...
need more info.

If you have to change the mount don't buy LR use a Jag XJS v12 mount same size but stronger.

How do your trailing and radius arm bushings look? Are the nuts tight? They would make that type of noise when since stress is being put on them when you press the gas (or let off it some times).

just a thought

What you are describing sounds exactly like what I have - a bad ball joint. I don't know if it's the track rod, cross tube, or whatever, but it's the ball joint on the rod that the steering damper is attached to, driver's side. Check that, see if it's your problem.

Easy fix, if that's it.

I just looked at the ball joint -- and there's no play in it, or anything conspicuous that would indicate a problem.

What were the symptoms you had?

Thanks again
