Head Gasket or Dropped Liner?

Have a '95 Disco with a LWB 4.2l block. Unfortunately, truck no longer lives with me, so can't put my eyes on it. Instead, truck lives with my dad in SW FL. Currently losing coolant through the motor. Getting some exhaust gas into the coolant as well. He has been unwilling to pull the heads and see what is there so far. Instead trying to get me to diagnose from afar. . What is the likelihood it is a blown head gasket as compared to a slipped liner? I have told him I think only way to figure things out is to pull heads and check. Any thoughts to narrow down the diagnosis before tearing it open? Think he would be ok pulling heads and replacing head gasket. He is afraid of the worst case scenario and would be unwilling to tackle block replacement himself. Thanks.

Can he look at spark plugs? If its not 1,2,7,or 8 its probably the block

Was there some incident with the cooling system recently? D1s generally don't just crap the headgasket like a d2 or p38. It takes an act of negligence

... also, dropped liners are not as frequent on RRC/D1 blocks.
Compression and cylinder leakdown test could be performed before pulling the heads, however, a small head gasket leak may not show up in either.

Thanks for the advice. Will see what I can have him check for me.

He mentioned it got hot (no idea real specifics) and he was losing coolant about same time. No overflow or big coolant loss on the ground. Just some smoke through exhaust - again no major clouds, just a little bit of white on occasion. He did say he tried to torque down some of the head bolts as they were a bit loose and that seemed to help for a few test runs. But then they would loosen up?

The liner moving around and coolant loss behind the liner are two seperate problems.
I think I would try a set of head gaskets if the trucks in pretty good shape. If it’s a piece of shit I would part it out.

thanks all. going to try and get the truck to me and I will tear into it. have the old 3.9 block sitting around still. in case it needs new block, will build that one up and swap. too much history into it to part and probably couldn't get enough out of it to make it worthwhile.
