First off, thanks for all of the input on my earlier question about the TJM and suspension upgrades... now that that is settled the next phase is what kind of lights to stick on that new bumper.

What exactly is the "city driving light" and what is the difference between "euro beam" and the standard pencil or fog beam? These are all different flavors of the Ralleye 4000, which from my browsings of old threads seems to be the verdict for best lighting option in general. If the city driving light is what the name suggests then it sure would come in handy trying to deal with the suidice pedestrians we have around here, but I can't really imagine driving around on the street with a couple 100w Hellas blazing.

Thanks for the help!

the city or "sidelight" is a small white bulb in the headlamp houseing, just 5 watts, in the city where you have all the ambient light from street lights a regular headlight doesn't do much so they have the city light, great for in the city, if you run "for off road use only" lights there you could A. get a ticket or B. have them smashed by a hammer....
as for aux. light patterns you have a euro beam which has a distinct cut off pattern very wide and flat and then a sharp angle upwards to the right....or to the left in the UK, Pencil beam throws light upto 1800' in a narrow beam of light down the TRAIL and a true fog lamp is low and wide to undercut fog and snow and is best to be amber/yellow for contrast and to minimize flashback reflections...... I think i am correct ....anyone else got .02?

In addition to a Disco, I have a gray market G-Wagen imported from Europe. The sidelights, as you call them, are a European thing. They're parking lights - the way they are wired to the switch, they come on only one side at a time, and with the corresponding tail light, to make the vehicle more visible when parked for a short time on the side of the road at night. Since they cant both be turned on at the same time, I don't believe their intended use is as Andy describes. Sorry Andy. When G's are imported and go through the DOT federalization process, these headlights are invariably removed and replaced with basic sealed-beams. G owners typically rush to re-install the Euro setup. I'm not sure why (but I'll do it too, one day ;) )

Yep, I have the city light in my Hella 4000's. I think it looks great, but that's about all it does. I don't think it cost that much more, and I would get it as an option. It gives your hellas a nice glow at nice when not in use.
