Hey, I've just registered, thought I'd introduce myself here as I'm primarily interested in series Land Rovers. My dad has had Series Land Rovers my whole life (and most of his, though he's been driving a ford ranger the last 10 years or so). I got my license last year and bought a 64 Series 2A 88 SW in February of last year. It's my daily driver, and I've been doing a bunch of work on it. My dad is also restoring his 62 which was his first car.

Here are a couple pictures of my rover:
first two are from the day I bought it, the third is from a couple months ago, as you can see I'm getting it ready for painting (the front fenders will be replaced witht the proper ones, as well as the hard top side panels as they are damaged, so they are not stripped) The military bumper has since been replaced, the fourth and fifth pics are from last week.

Welcome!

Hey Greg,

what did you use to strip your paint? I've been chemically stripping using a Klean-Strip Premium but it seems to take forever to get it all off. But I'm hesitant to use a orbital sander in case I'd burr the aluminum.

What have you found works best?

Cheers

Glad to see another series on the road. I am kinda like yourself, got a 109 many years ago and finally 3 years ago got it on the road. Been driving it daily everyday since then.

Don't let these peoples get to ya. They wouldn't ever drive a series because they'll spill their latte all over themselves. . Keep driving that truck and get it in the dirt!

:p

I think I was using klean-strip too. That and a LOT of hand sanding. Took a long time (still not done)

Great stripper - KWIK - the marine version. Eats all types of paint. Wear gloves, it eats skin too....

Welcome in!

Additional stripping tricks...

Greg,

I just finished stripping my paint yesterday- FINALLY. If you're still stripping your paint I thought I'd share what really worked.

After chemically stripping with the Klean Strip Premium (didn't get a chance to use the Marine strip, that might work better), I bought a 3M paint stripping disc from Lowes. It's about 6" in diameter with a very rough black appearance and fits onto the end of any drill. Yeah, my finger wore out from holding the drill trigger down for awhile but it really knocked off the paint in record time, and didn't eat or burr the aluminum at all. Something to think about.

Looks like you've got a good project there. From what I can see it looks pretty straight. Interesting to see a IIa with SIII wings, not alot of those around in the states.
Welcome to the Series world.

cdmbrennan, thanks for the tip, but I've just got a bit of sanding left to do now! That and finishing up the roof, but it wasn't properly prepped before it was painted, so the paint is coming off real easy with the stripper.

aquito, buy one then! There are a ton of series rovers for sale. Just check all the sale sites everyday and you'll come up with one for the right price in the right location eventually. Check ebay and LRX.com frequently.

antichrist, the series 3 wings will be coming off this summer after my pair of early 2a ones are painted. If anyone in the san franciso bay area wants them, let me know, otherwise they're going in the scrap heap.

And bob, I've sent you an e-mail.
