i need electrical help

I have a 96 disco and about 2 weeks ago the tach started only reading 500rpm so right away i thought there goes the alt! Well turns out the alt was putting out 14.4 from the back of the alt but the battery was only getting 12.8 so i changed the battery and even the alt even though that one was good. Still only 12.8 at the battery all my light bulbs are good I unhooked all aftermarket goodies,and cleaned all alt and battery connections. I would appreciate anyones suggestions...THANX much BRIAN

Pull the cables off of the bat and check it. the bat will keep the voltage lower then the output because it is a load on the alt. iff you have 14.4 on the cables and no bat it should be fine. i think the tack is a whole differnt problem

i TRIED THAT AND THERE WAS 14.4 AT THE BATTERY CABLES WITH THE BATTERY UNHOOKED AND THEN THE TACH STARTS WORKING WEIRD HUH!!!

I also hooked up a meter in the truck and it reads a little over 12 but jumps to 14.5 when i unhook the battery is this normal ? shouldnt that meter be reading somewhere between 13.5 and 14.5 depending on the load when the batter is hooked up?

Check the other ends of the battery cables for tightness ??

How is yer ground? Whats the reading between fat ugly positive cable on back and corpse of alt? Then, what the reading between that cable and "-" terminal on battery.

Possible answer can be that you got funky batter of course... Which one you using? Blue/yellow top per chance? Also make measure with all electronics shut down.

How is your ignition feels? When you done last service (plugs, wires, cap & etc)? Wouldnt you happen to get new coil recently?

the conections are tight... I tried two good "new batteries" two different but both good alts I just had a tune up about 2500 ago (runs great).. Ill have to check the readings on both ends of the cable..Thanx for your input and ideas.

I wanna thank everybody for your input ... What I found is the (I hate to admit it) I put the belt on wrong it worked for about 5 months and then just wore out on the inside. New belt put on the right way is all it took ...Thanx again
