Not really sure if this is a tool, but I am looking to purchase a Jerry Can. I was wondering what recomendatins you have as far as plastic vrs. metal ones go. I found what appears to be a sweet deal on both, but want the pros/cons. Metal is heavier I know, but are the plastic ones as duable. Here are the ones that I am considering...

The first is the metal and the second one the plastic.

Not to hijack my own thread, but I am also looking to get some towing shackles and I found these.... A pair of 'em for $12 Not sure what I will do with them, but they do look beefy.

I think this just comes down to personal choice. I like the way the metal ones seal (compression seal v. thread seal), I worry less about the threads backing out. The military uses the Scepter cans now, and you don't have to worry about rust, etc.

I think you'll do fine with a quality plastic or metal jerry can - just buy good ones, there's a lot of cheap junk out there.

My test is whether I am comfortable tossing a fuel can in the back seat lying on it's side with no worries. I lay my metal cans on their side on my carpeted floorboards all the time...

Thanks for the info... I do like tha fact the plastic ones are lighter (only 5 lbs) versr the near 10 pounds of a metal one. I think I will end up with the metal ones that I pictured. I have a long trip to make and extra fuel will be nice to have.

Maybe people already know this, but there's an easy way to fill a disco from a jerry can, particulary the metal one's that are heavier.
Open your rear door all the way. The after you've lifted the can and have the spout in the fuel filler neck, just pivot the can around and rest it on the spare tire. It'll lean against the side/window and you can hold it in place just by leaning against it. The spare supports the weight.
I'm not going to applogise for being lazy. :p

Well, since the cans are often in my garage, I'd have to get a roof rack, install it, then put the cans up on the rack to let it siphon. My way is less work. :p

Yes, of course if they are on a roof rack then siphon makes more sense. I assumed that part would be obvious to people. ;)

I ended up getting the plastic Sceptor Jerry can from www.sportsmansguide.com It was a used Canadian jerry can. I cleaned it out, put some fuel and Sta-Bil in it, drive around and let it slosh. The condition was more worn than what I wanted, but it looks pretty cool. I painted most of it red to comply with laws and now it's lashed in the cargo area of my D1.

I found the greatest place for shackels. Tractor Supply Company in Upstate NY. I went home and checked out this place. Found some great 4-ton shackles for $6, grade-8 bolts, recovery hooks for $4 and I made a pretty good kit for when I do get off the beaten path. This is a chain store but it appears they have a website. http://www.mytscstore.com/default.asp

Just my .02 on the Disco stocking stuffers.

Hey Tom, I haven't even had a chance to use the cans I bought from you at MAR, mostly because I need to get a spout for them. Any leads on a good source for a spout suited to those cans? Thanks in advance.

Get the Super Syphon. Since the gas tank is under the floorboard, so you won't even have to lift the cans. Just pop the SS in, shake it, and it'll dump right into your gas tank. You can lash down 4 or five jerrys across the back of a disco or rr easy.

I made a 12 foot SS by replacing the plastic hose with a longer one. I can mount 6 jerrys on my roll cage, fill and empty all 6 without unstrapping a single one. ;)

Actually, I roll it up and keep it in a zippered bag that came with a set of tire chains. Of course, I air the hose out as long as possible before bagging it, but even in a rush it's not an issue. Could also use a big zip lock, I suppose.

What do you store your super siphon in after using it to avoid the gas smell?

What gas smell after using it? I drive a Defender and have never noticed it over all the other smells and drafts! :)

I like the metal cans, because of the way that they seal. I just trust them more than the threaded ones. And I've never had one leak, even on it's side and subject to dramatic elevation and temperature changes.
