I just hope that people don't abuse it though and run all over the place which I think is what started that whole thing wasn't it.

Highly unlikely. These battles out West are power plays. The judge obviously saw this and ruled accordingly. The envirowacko philosophy is one baby step at a time until they have kicked all trace of mankind back to the East Coast, or SoCal:)

A few years (ago pre kids) my wife and I took a ski trip around the western USA in our 1994 Disco. We hit Sun Valley, Big Sky Resort in Montana, all the resorts in Utah etc. We also went to jackson Hole Wyoming. While in Jackson Hole we rented a snowmobile and rode I think 80+ miles round trip to Old Faithful Lodge. From the park border to the lodge we saw very few other snowmobilers. Once at the lodge there wer tons of snowmobilers. NOBODY strays off the road. Noise is not that bad. We stopped a few times and turned the motor off and it was silent even with other snowmos in the area. The snow is a great sound dampner. With the new 4 stroke legislation noise and pollution should be an even lesser issue. The only thing I think they should do is make a limit for the number of snowmos in the park each day. A total ban on snowmos was way overboard.

No, but now that you suggested it Andy... :D

Seriously - like Kevin just mentioned and Craig complained about, the noise and pollution issue will soon be gone. Within a VERY short timeframe 2 stroke engines will not be made or imported. All companies will be making 4-stroke sleds and the 2-strokers will be gone.

Much of this is due to California and the Yellowstone ordeal. Now - while I am as conservative as they come, I think this is a good thing. There is some four stroke technology that is being developed that creates more power, is MUCH quieter, and produces gobs less emissions. I think this is a great thing when you consider that a 2-stroke weedeater produces at least 20 times the pollutants of our Rovers...

Curtis, in summertime, it seems like all mankind is already in SoCal :)

But... I have just as much dislike to snowmobiles as I have to jet skis and dirt bikes. When I'm out there, I am not looking forward to enjoying the drone of a bunch of 2-stroke engines.

Come on. I backcountry ski, rock climb and whitewater kayak but am very conservitive. There is room enough for everyone. It boils down to respect. If I go snowmobiling I am not going to choose a spot frequented by skiiers. If you go to Yellowstone I know that in order to get a "wilderness experience" I need to stay away from the main road. You know where the jetskis and dirtbikers hang out. Just go elswhere. Living in California it seems that all the dirt bikers gravitate to the same spots anyway so they are easy to avoid. I frequent the Deathvalley area and can't remember the last time I saw a biker except for a few the Saline Hot Springs :D Ahh Saline hot springs. What was I talking about? Don't matter I'm packing up and heading out to the springs for some peace and quiet.

Kevin, dirtbikers are everywhere. I wonder if they ride over Dusy Ershim or Hammers, but wouldn't be surprised if they do. The answer to where dirt bikers and jet skiers get together in California is every patch of dirt, and every spot of water surface. I want to cross-country ski in Mammoth, and I can't do that without a fear of a snowmobile roaring from around the bend. As a result, I don't go to Glamis, rarely go to Truckhaven, never take my kayak to Mission Bay in San Diego and rarely - to the mountain lakes.
So I can't even feel good for snowmobilers for their small victory.

This reflects difference in preferences. My only reason to own 4x4s is to be able to get away from the crowds; the 2-stroke people seems to gather in flocks.

Give it a few years and most will be gone. California is the first state to ban 2-strokes. I don't recall the year, but 2007 sounds right. After that no 2's can be sold there.

well, they will ban sales but not use. I'll live with it, but it's just like terrorism for Mr.Kerry - a nuisance :)

... Tomorrow's the air show at Miramar MCAS... and ALL DAY today Blue Angels are flying over my workplace. Damn...

Peter,

Head out to the Saline Valley if you want to see a good airshow in a great setting. We can talk more about this over a cigar and a cold one. :D

A guy crashed and died this morning at the beginning of the show.
Don't know if I'm in the mood for more...
A cold one never hurts, though. Now I can't work anymore...
