Depending on if its for just trail riding you don't need anything super.. I'm currently using a radio shack crap radio [that i got for 20 bucks after a rebate!] and a magnetic roof antenna [hopefully putting a firestik up within the next couple weeks].. and i've been able to catch everything on the trail rides and talk to truckers on the way home.

More importantly for reception/sound is how you install it and the antenna you have and how you tune it.

Cam from The Jersey Devil has a good write up here of his research/experience on getting his CB..

I use the uniden Pro520xl. It is pretty nice and has the RF Gain control. It also fits perfectly where the sunroof switches would go, which is another reason why i got it..

i'll second the "Bills 2-way radio shop" in CA, that's where i got most of my partsf, and they really know their stuff...
i went cobra 75 with a 4' firestik II, RG-58A/U cable w/fire ring and quick disconnect.

I have a firestick with the wire running to the side of the passenger seat under the carpet. I was conversing with other rover owners up to 20-25 miles down the beach with this radio. When you are in a jam you can use the battery pack and make it mobile or guide people from outside the vehicle. Not as much range with the little antenae.

I got a new Cobra handheld on eBay for like 15 bucks and an el cheapo magnetic antenna from Radio Shack to run in my old XJ, but haven't hooked up anything in the Disco yet because I want to wait until I can afford to do it right this time. Even after tuning the antenna the reception was terrible. I think the problem was likely the antenna and not the radio, so if you can only afford to spend the money on one thing (radio vs. antenna) I would go with a nice antenna. Plus, why spend $$$$ on a Land Rover if it is just going to end up looking like it was hijacked by a redneck?
