FYI:

In a more limited safety action, the agency said Ford Motor Co.'s Land Rover unit was recalling 17,263 Land Rover LR3 SUVs to replace potentially defective fuel tanks. The vehicles are from the 2005 model year.

Make : LAND ROVER Model : LR3 Year : 2005
Manufacturer : LAND ROVER
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V376000 Mfg's Report Date : AUG 26, 2005
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 17263
Summary:
SOME SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY HAVE FUEL TANKS THAT CONTAIN AN INTERNAL BREATHER PIPE THAT WAS NOT MADE TO SPECIFICATION. THIS COULD RESULT IN EXCESSIVE SWELLING AND CRACKING OF A GROMMET AND SUBSEQUENT DETACHMENT OF THE BREATHER PIPE FROM A CONNECTOR TUBE. WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL IN THE TANK IS ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE DETACHED JOINT, FUEL MAY THEN ENTER THE BREATHER PIPE.
Consequence:
THE VEHICLE MAY EXHIBIT MIL ILLUMINATION, FUEL ODOR, DRIVABILITY CONCERNS SUCH AS HESITATION, MISFIRE, STALLING, ROUGH RUNNING, OR DIFFICULTY IN STARTING. IF THE AMOUNT OF FUEL FLOWING INTO THE BREATHER PIPE REACHES THE VAPOR CANISTER AND EXCEEDS ITS CAPACITY, THE EXCESS FUEL MAY BE DISCHARGED ONTO THE GROUND. FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANKS. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OCTOBER 14, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800-637-6837.
Notes:
LAND ROVER RECALL NO. B016. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

Not yet. You will be notified by Land Rover. The recomendation is to not fill your gas tank all the way full, especially if it is over 100 degrees outside. The warm weather owners will be notified first, but it won't happen for a while. If you have a problem, they will obviously fix it before you receive the notice.

THEIR IS A NEW PROBLEM WITH LR3's
This moring as i was driving to school my low coolant warning was going off and i noticed the temp gauge had gone up past it's normal driving level. Now after school i took it to the shop and it turns out the sensor or something related to it for the coolant has gone bad. Now this is a free replacement but they will only do it if , it has the problem. Atleast thats what they told me and my mom at LRN

I had the same problem. It took a couple of trips to the Centre before they figured it out. They first replaced the sensor and when the ambient air temp went over 80 degrees, it happened again. They ended up needing to replace the coolant reservoir. There is a new part that fixes this issue.
Also, I got my recall notice for the gas tank. They are going to replace in two weeks.

Cheers..

Hi guys I am new to the forum. I have an LR3 SE 2005. I have had the Low Coolant warning also but found out that I actually had low coolant so I can't blame the sensor. Everything else as been wonderful. I've had the truck almost a year now and have never had a single fault what so ever.

As a member of Texas Rovers I frequently (about every weekend) put the truck through some pretty rough terrain right behind tricked out DII and Defenders. I'm very happy with the LR3 and despite some of the negative vibe on DiscoWeb, which is a shame since I have always considered this sight the best Land Rover forum on the internet, I plan to slowly convert my LR3 into a trail / expedition worthy vehicle. So I hope to keep you all updated on my efforts and again thanks for having me on the site.

Cheers,
Nomad

FWIW. The coolant level sender is part of the bottle. It can't be replaced seperatly. Unless they replaced the ambient sensor first and not the coolant sensor/bottle first time around. But that doesn't make sense.

I re-read my message, and I wasn't clear. You are correct, they replaced the ambient sensor first. When the problem came back, they replaced the coolant sensor/bottle. They had ordered the new coolant sensor/bottle, but they got an old one, so they had to reorder it.

Still waiting on the replacement for the fuel tank. They said another week or so.

Cheers...

If you don't live in Saudi or AZ in the summer, don't worry about the gas tank. All that would happen is you *might* spill fuel when you 'fill up'. Its more of an EPA thing than anything else. Get it done during your next oil change. Don't go out of your way to get this done! Your truck is not gonna expload in the garage. And supplywise, my dealer has a stack of tanks.

I had my coolant bottle replaced awile back and it amazed me and the mechanic that instead of replacing just the sensor on the bottle, he had to order the whole thing. I could SEE the fluid so I knew it was ok. They swapped it on my next oil change.. 4 months later.

I agree Tim. This didn't seem like a big deal to me. Plus it's winter time (it's 15 degrees here today). I am not far from the Centre though, so it really isn't an inconvenience. The guys at my local Centre are awesome! They take really good care of me. Thanks again for the info!

Cheers...

Poor advice. The recall isn't temperature related at all. If gasoline fails to vaporize in your location on Earth, I'd skip it. The evap setup on the tank is internal. The connection from the internal array seperates in the tank. Liquid fuel can get sucked up into the evap system. The engine will burn rich, set off a MIL, store a rich code, and emit excess emissions. We've seen 2. Worst case, with a full tank, when it expands, it will overcome the charcoal can, and yes, it can spill out onto the ground. If gasoline fails to burn in your location on Earth, then no worries, eh? It's free. Don't be stupid, get it done.

Jeff,
Believe me, I am still planning on having it done. It didn't seem like a rampant issue and I have not had any issues, but it is still a recall item. My basic opinion is that companies don't send out recall notices (which costs them a ton) for no reason so it should be done as soon as possible. So, I had called the Centre when I received my letter and am going to have them do it as soon as the new tank arrives. Since they are right down the street, it makes life just that much easier...hehe

Thanks frickjp- I also said this-

"Get it done during your next oil change. Don't go out of your way to get this done! Your truck is not gonna expload in the garage. "

There are what, 15, 20000 LR3s on the road in the States alone and Ive not heard on various boards of one exploding.

If you fully read my post I do NOT say "don't get it done." I say don't get your tit in a ringer about it.

I brought up the temp thing because this became an issue first in Saudi, then in hot AZ. I put 2 and 2 together.
