Do yall think it would be safe to move my Fullsize spare from under my car to my expedition roof rack.I have the 18 inch SE rims on 255/60/r18's and not sure if it would be safe to use rachet straps. This LR does see 60mph + speeds almost everyday and hope that i can run 75mph + with the tire up their. Has anyone else mounted their spares on roof rack with no problems.

You should definately be fine...I would wedge it into a back corner if it where me, and use one or two black rachet straps.

The thing is it's the factory expedition style, you might have seen one has big wind deflector in front like the G4 one. and the rear has a gap in it but a guard rail on top. I think I might just mount it in the center for safety

You want to do this why?

It will 'handle' different because the added weight on the roof will change the CGs of the truck and you will also lose another 1mpg. The rack itself was at least 1mpg.

If you just want to do it to be 'cool' why don't you mount it on the hood? That is SO much COOLER!!!!!

But, I guess you just want your truck to look like all those other people's who throw their spare on the roof of their Nisson Xterra.

Again, why do you want to do this?

Tim,

He may want to do this to get it out from underneath the vehicle, so that it doesn't get punctured off-road. Yes, with my '89 Range Rover with no sways I could feel a difference in my COG with the tire on top...So I took it off. Now it is taking up precious cargo room in the back. But I seriously doubt that he would have a noticible difference in COG in an LR3. Gas...Hmmmm...Maybe :)

No I don't want to do this to look cooler Tim, I was just thinking that maybe it would be a better place to keep the tire than under the LR3. Considering maybe that take the spare out on a trail in the mud might be a pain or have what i belive would be easier get the spare out. In No way do I want to make my car so called "cooler" by putting the spare on my rack. But now since you so politly pointed out that it would probaly cost me more MPG and that it is a stupid thing to do, I'm just going to leave it were it is.

actually thats a really good idea. I could make a custom wooden enclosure that houses the spare so it doesn't slide around and have all my winch accesories in it or tools . And it can be made from wood and a good freind of mine is a great carpenter so it's possible.

You're quite right. If you actually take your truck off road, the undercarriage is about the worst place I can think of for the spare. Keep it on the roof rack until someone offers a proper swing-away spare tire carrier for the back.

Cheers,
