MT/R Tire Wear

Installed new Good Year Wrangler MT/R's LT265/75R16 about eleven months ago. Since then I have driven 9000 miles. Tread depth is down by 3 mm (0.12 inches). The new tire tread depth is about 15 mm, now after 9000 miles it is 12 mm deep. Nearly half of this mileage has been done offroad and the rest on tarmac. The tread wear is uniform, but is this wear rate normal for such a tire? It seems to me a little too much for such a short mileage, but then it is the first time I install MT/R's.

That is accually pretty good wear for a soft compound tire. I have not owned the MT/R's, but most aggresive soft compound tires have a life span on and pavement between 15 and 20k tops. Depending on driving style and the amount of air you have in the Tires.

Using that tire off-road will drasticly reduce the tread life. Next time, get the BFG MT. The BFG is alot like the MT/R, but, IMO, a better tire. They're cheaper, preform better off-road, easier to ballance, last longer...Things my be a little different on the west coast, but on the east coast, I have yet to see these tire excell. But, they do well in snow.

I've got a friend who had a set of 285's on his Tacoma. He was able to get 55,000 out of them. Granted they almost looked like slicks.

Also consider the weight of the disco. It's quite a bit heavier than most other vehicles, esp compact pickups, and will wear the tires out quicker. The mtr's are good tires but have a soft compound allowowing it to do well in the rocks. Just make sure to keep them balanced, rotated and proper psi to get the most out of them. HTH!

Tarek,
What air pressure are you running, this can have some bearing also.
By the way, I am running 265 BFG MT's and average 45,000 plus miles a set easily, my son is running 37" MTR's on his Jeep, has had them for nearly 2 years with little wear at all, I know the Jeep is lighter but he is getting better wear with the MTR's than his last set of BFG's.

go tell it on the mountain, Disco Mike!
personally speaking- the MTR is a better off raod tire if you keep ontop of it. the BFGs are great (which is what i am running now beacause the MTRs dont come in the size i needed)
MTR= better off road
BFG = better all around

I've been quite satisfied with my Dunlop MudRovers. Have 45K on them and they still have, maybe another 10K of life left. Granted they may not be as good as the BFGs, but for the money you can't beat them. $110 each installed at NTB. Better than BFG at $135+. Driven them in snow and ice conditions as well with little comparitable difference to most others. I think I might stick with them a second go round.
