The fill plug has a 1/2" square recess to it, so I used a 1/2" drive U-joint extension along with a 6" extension on my ratchet and it worked beautifully.
The only problem is that you'll need to remove the tool before un-threading the plug all the way and finish by hand or you'll back the whole show up tight against the trans-brake drum.
I use the ratchet only. I drop my ratchet down from above, handle first, in order to get past the E-Brake cable housing. I break the fill plug loose and un screw it out just to the point where I can barely remove the ratchet, then I remove the ratchet and continue turning the plug with my fingers until it's out.
