I have 1994 and have never sat in any other year so I cant tell you much about differances other than the II is wider and longer, a little more power and thats about all I know. I have been very happy with my 94, very few problems after 130k miles. Unless you live outside North America the Discovery or any other Land Rover was never offered as a diesel. There are a few trucks running around that are either gray market or converted but that is about it. Whatever you end up getting get a good mechanic to give it the one over and try and get one with a good service history either by dealer or owner. Good luck.

No diesels sorry. At least that I'm aware of. What you using the truck for and by the way asking what the best year is will create some heated debate even though it's a 95 d1. study ask this board and don't take the firsts thing that comes along unless you are sure it's a good deal. But get one you will enjoy it and have a great time. I have no regrets yet (that sound is me knocking on wood.)

D1 was from 1994? to 1999.
D2 was from 1999 to 2004.

D2 is about 6 inches longer in the cargo area, and has a number of improvements over the D1 in mechanical/electrical items. The D2 windshield has an addition 2" of viewing area at the top if you are tall. A number of people who offroad prefer the D1 as it is a little more simple and has less bulk and rear overhang, and has integrated CDL in the Hi-low shift. The D2 has ETC instead of CDL but the '99-'02 models still have the CDL nub on the transfer case and there are 3-4 methods of using it. The '04 has electronic CDL control installed. D2 also got Bosch electronics, not sure if the late D1s did also, but I think they still had Lucas.

D1 got better as it aged, so a '99 is both newer and more resolved problem-wise.
D2 got the 4.6liter V8 in '03, but the lack of CDL nub makes late '02 and '03 models less desireable if you are considering offroad. '04 is the best choice there.

I'm sure I missed many differences, but this is a start. No doubt lot's of additional info will be offered.

Good Luck,

thanks to everyone so far.

i do intend to use it as an ORV, but nothing real extreme as i already have a rig i trailer for that. i want to use it for mountain trail rides and camping.

i got an issue of Land Rover World from the book store today and there were all kinds of diesels in it. i know it's a U.K. mag. though.
