Passenger seat will not go back

Well, I moved the passenger seat all the way foreward today as I was cleaning out my '96 disco. After cleaning I went to move it back, and it just clicks, but will not move. I found the fuses under the drivers side seat, and they are okay, but didn't see any under the passenger seat , although it's harder to tell with the cd player there, and it so far foreward I can bearly fit my big head in front of it. I assume the motor is bad, but it went foreward just fine. Anyone have any insights? I did a search, but didn't get anything.

Thanks,

~Ryan

Lucky it wasnt the drivers side!

Peter Blatt had this same problem on a trip when he was stuck somewhere he accidentally lifted the seat right up high and it wouldn't go back down! He had to take the switch apart and carefully clean all the contacts, but the switch has a whole load of them inside so be careful and note it will take some time! You can do as he did after you get it set in the correct position, just remove the damn thing so you cant move it ever again!

Ryan: Pop the back off and clean around the silver prongs with alcohol. I too had to drive home one time with me knees to the dash when the seat would not go back. Good Luck.

Thanks Dean and Melissa, I'll give it a try. If it were just a bad switch contact though, would I still be able to hear the click under the seat whenever I tried to hit teh switch? Your right, very lucky it wasn't teh drivers side. Melissa has the good fortune of being very skinny, because I would never fit in there!

Thanks,
~Ryan

OT: Melissa, did you become a HK girl? What did you shoot?

On the topic, I support the suggestion of getting the seat in "the right" position and then removing the switch assembly entirely -- especially if no one else drives the truck.

It could be the switch. You should clean the contacts anyway as a preventive measure. You'll be amazed by the amount of crap that gets in the back and inside of the switch. If not cleaned at least once in it's life, the contacts inside in switch will be eaten away to a point of never completing the required circuits. In some cases I've had to use two switches just to make one good one.

There are a few motors (three I think) that operate the various positions of the seat. Since you're hearing a click, power is probably reaching the motor however the motor is not moving. Try giving the motor (I don't remember which one drives the back and forth) a few taps with a hammer. It may free up the brushes and get a final movement out of it before it quits all together.
