Just an idea, but if you like the Disco size but want something a little more reliable than your current 02, what about considering an 03 or 04 DII as an upgrade? The 4.6engine is quite nice and it would still have the overall familiarity of your current DII. You might be able to find one with a few months of warranty left and then purchase the extended optin?

FWIW...
That's pretty much the strategy I started with... Find an 04' with low miles, etc.... but I dropped that idea because I just don't have a whole bunch of confidence in the engine/cooling system of a used Disco and I'd hate to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. I've already done my, Head gaskets, radiator, waterpump, tstat hoses.... blah blah blah......

I can understand your concern. I would hope the 04s were much more reliable than the 02, but I don't actually own one so I can't offer much advice. I've toyed with the idea of upgrading my 95 to an 04, but I have the opposite problem...my 95 has been extremely reliable for it's age, so I'm a little worried about making the change!

FWIW, my sister has an 03 with close to 40K on the clock and she's had no problems so far....

Good luck in your search! I think it will be interesting to see how the prices of the LR3s fall in the next year....I'd like to drive one just to feel the differences that you mentioned above.

I'll probably get flamed to high-hell for suggesting it, but here goes. Besides are '06 LR3, we also have a '03 Lexus GX470. Though the two are competitors on paper, they drive completely different. The GX feels much smaller, though is only an inch narrower and shorter, but weighs nearly 1K less. It does well off-road and has good upgrade potential, as it shares its chassis with the Prado and 4Runner. In the four years we have had ours, the only warranty claim I have made is for squeeky door hinges.

You can get a used '03-'04 in great condition for $28-$34K. Add $2K for a 7/75K Platinum warranty.

I've heard great things about the Lexus SUVs. Don't they have a standard limited slip and optional CDL? The Reliability is there, no doubt! I know someone people often build up the full-size Lexus trucks (the one that is like the Land Cruiser) with good luck.

It has: TORSEN? [9] Limited-Slip Center Differential (LSCD) (with manual-locking feature) , which works rather well. It also turns-off the Vehicle Stability Control in first and second gears for both low/high-range. The GX also has the A-TRACS, which is the traction control; which I am not to fond of, as it does not let you readily spin the wheels when you are truly stuck.

Update: I went with a 4Runner as my daily driver, the LR3s were just too expensive for me.

The 02' Disco sits in my driveway awaiting either an "as is" buyer or a new engine should I decide to keep her.

they look naked w/o the spare tire on the back but i believe they have an aftermarket set-up to mount a swing away. definitely looks nicer. i was in moab for last years national rally on 'steel bender' w a D90, P38, RRC, a few discos, and an LR3. I have to say, I was impressed with the ease in which it climbed over some of the obstacles.

Swap payments...and extend the term of your note out another 3 or 4 years? :ack: Maybe you should go somewhere for financial advice. Your 400 bucks put in your pocket every month for three years works out to $14,400 (I'll let you work up your earned interest relative to where you decide to stash your cash;) ) Put it away pre-tax and make even more.

I don't have an opinion either way on the LR3, but If your car runs, you should keep it. You don't need to buy an LR3. I'm also not trying to be a dick here about your financial decisions, but this thread comes up all the time on this board, and if more people pointed out the negatives of buying a car on credit then less folks would do it and all of us would be better off.:D

Used to be that "making payments" was the short term thing we tolerated while we worked to achieve ownership, now "making payments" has somehow become the accepted cost of driving. Welcome to America!:patriot:

You forgot to factor in what is reliability worth to you. I work in a field of work where being late is not an option. I never own a car after 40,000 miles. I pay for it, but make enought money to drive a full size rover.

LOL, why did you buy a Land Rover again? Have you ever researched vehicle reliability ratings?!!!

V6 is a slug the moment you drive the v8. Not much of a fan of Ford Explorer V6. But the jaguar/Ford V8 will make your eyes light up. Its great

I want to know what Gil Stevens is investing $14,400 in to achieve a $400.00 monthly return. Gil please email me direct I'm all over that kind of investment. Can I quadruple that amount?

haha.. at first i was like wtf is this guy talking about? i guess i was actually thinking the $40k dude would have spent on an LR3, but even at that $400/month is a hefty return.. then i said a portion of the the $400 a month, not the entire thing. but a $40k LR3 wouldnt have a $400 a month payment, it would be closer to $800 a month. so i guess the long and short of it is i dont know what the f*ck kind of investment i was thinking about.. but i guess it was something with a 12-13% annual yield..

but the point remains the same.. there are better places to put money then paying cash for a car.. :D
