Putting a Diesel in a Disco??

I'm searching for some information on putting a diesel in a gas disco. I've found some information awhile back but can't locate it now?? I'm curious what diesel motor is commonly used or will make the install as easy as possible.

I have a 95 project disco which is getting the frame blasted and coated soon but if I go to a diesel I'd like to get the engine mounts in and the motor / trans hooked up before the coating is done.
Any help is greatly appreciated...THANKS

If something catastrophic ever happens to my V8 or the price of gas goes orbital, this is the engine I have been fantasizing about.

One factor keeping me from doing it now is the rate of exchange makes this engine cost almost $10K before installation here in the US.

I'm planning on a 300tdi or the 300tdi based Powerstroke for my '95, with the Zeus timing gears.
For strictly driving in civilization, the TD5 sounds nice. But for my use there's too much electrickery on the TD5.
The nice thing about either is that they are Rover engines, and were stock in the Discoveries, so everything is off the shelf.

edited to fix my fat fingering the keyboard

There are loads of different types of engines that can go in as long as you have the correct adapters.
However for ease and simplicity it would make sense to stick to LRs own engines, the most appropriate would be
-200Tdi
-300Tdi
although if you buy new you could use the "300Tdi" 2.8 powerstroke.
Make sure you get an engine from a Discovery as they differ slightly to those from Defenders. I think the exhaust manifold or Turbo are slightly different.

Take a look at Disco-Tech Industries ( www.disco-tech.ca ) They have new diesels and conversion kits.

curiously, can you convert a gas motor to a diesel motor here? How do you address the smog issue?

If you are a high mileage driver, the ROI on this diesel conversion may be worth the while and these motors almost last forever!

Don't know if you remember GM's attempt at converting gas motors into diesel back in the 70's during the fuel crisis. Many of them got new engines several times around under warrantee. The reason being that GM failed to upgrade the crank, rods, bearings and other crucial components. The higher compression was hell on the bottom end. For every point you up the compression, you cut the bottom end longevity.
Petrol engine are just not cut out for diesel use. You can go from diesel to gas and have an overbuilt engine. I know several people that did that with their Olds diesel 350s and got 12.5:1 compression.

My dad has a 98 5 speed tdi it's great car,bit noisier, bit slower till it comes on boost, otherwise it's sweet. They run a normal Bosch VE injection pump that is easy to trick up for more power and to cut the turbo lag. Heaps of TDIs and TD5s in Australia. Great fuel milage a round 900km to a tank of fuel.

I think dletadude meant can you replace a petrol engine with a deisel. I don't know bout other states, but I asked that very question when I was getting my emissions check this year here in Atlanta. I'd need to fill out a form and submit it to the state so I get a letter or sticker or something ok'ing it. As best as I could tell, no fee involved and simple to do.
Now if I can just get the $7500US to get the PowerStroke kit.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Some great info on here as usual.

I'd like to be able to put a LR Diesel in my truck but up here in Canada finding one of those is harder then finding a Defender.

Any ideas on used motors? and what vehicles they came in? I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic and he might be able to find one..

THANKS

What about a used motor from Australia, Dad was at AJS LR wreckers a few weeks ago and Tony tried to sell him a 98 TDI 300 engine for $4.5 K AUD I think, from a wreck that had been hit in the tail.

hey guys don't forget, the Rover V8 is aluminum and extrmemely light comparitively. Most diesels are cast iron. If you put a heavy motor up there, you will have to think suspension too. It could really change alot of things.

do not use a 6.2 they are some of the worst diesels ever made, problem-wise...
