Putting my Disco on a lift - what to watch out for?

Hey folks -
I'm doing the 60k service on my Disco II this Saturday at a friend's shop. He has a vehicle lift which has adjustable supports for the frame members (not wheels).

My question is this: should the Discos be lifted from the jacking points? I'm not sure because of two things I *think* I've heard before:

1. I remember a post about how a RR got screwed up at the Costco tire shop because they lifted it wrong. Something about how Rovers are different than almost every other vehicle and standard lifting messed it up.

2. I think I heard somewhere that the Disco needs to be supported by it's axels.

Anyone know for sure? My friend's lift is adjustable, but I'm not sure if it can be configured to lift the axels in particular. I'm really excited to get going on the project, just wondering about this last issues.

Thanks,
Adrian

I have lifted from the frame as wheel as from the axles. Axles might be a little better especially if you have SLS otherwise either will work fine.

As a rule youa re asking for trouble with a twin post lift on a rover unless the guy is sed to it. There is a very small window for both lift points to hit the frame in the right spot and it sits awkwardly..... FRAME , not the axles and not the body.

Pep Boys lifted mine using the rear trailing link bars.
They really didn't even begin to understand the problem after lengthy explanation, as they are after all- graduates of a three day tire college.

They did it that way because its so awkward to try and hit the frame , when you do hit the frame you dont have the proper seperation on the lift arms to really support it stable like. Twin post is a bad idea......

Probably what happened to the Range Rover was when they lifted the truck they didn't support the axels which caused the air suspension bags to seperate from their mounts. Shouldn't be a problem with a DII, unless (I'm guessing), as stated above you have the SLS.

Hey guys thanks for the help so far.

I do not have SLS, so that's off my worry list. I just went out with my friend who is going to do the work and took a look under the truck. I see what Kyle is talking about with the frame being so awkward. He's done a ton of mechanic and after looking at the Disco and hearing the words of caution is sure we can get it on his lift without problem. I'm not sure if his lift is more adjustable than others (it's a Rotary spo9 - if that means anything) but he is confident.

One last question for the group: does anyone have pictures or diagrams on where the best places are to lift from?

Thanks again,
Adrian
