First off, I just wanted to say hi, as Im new here. I wanted to know if I could buy one of those key blanks on ebay and have a spare made. Has anyone done it?
I had several made at a locksmith for about 1.25 each. Seems like a pain to order one. I did ask the dealer when I first got my truck, and he offered me one at the bargain price of $35.
My keyless entry (built into the key) died ironically enough the day after I got my truck. I know roverconnection.com offers a replacement, but $95?! Are there any cheaper replacement keyless entry options out there for an '01 DII?
At my dealer the key is $5, but they could not do it there since their machine was broken. But no hardwear store I have been to can copy the key since it is so big.
I bought a spare from Rovers North for about $7 and took it to a local locksmith. He cut it in about two minutes. He also had ilco key blanks that would fit, so he cut me one of those, too. He only charged me $4 to cut both, 1 key included! If you have a "Remote in Key" unit though, they are not cheap!! Thank You, LRW.
Just be sure that the shank (head to first cut) is long enough. I got one from tha local hardware store , opened the door and started the truck just fine. However, it would not come out of the ignition switch. The uncut part of the shank was to short to allow the key to be pushed in and released. Ended up having to use a drumel tool to cut back the head of the key in order to remove it.
LOL key stuck in ignigtion! dremel tool to remove! that should tell you something right there! pay 35 bucks at the dealer and be done with it!
i am all for altenitive means but for 35 dollars! dealer price, bite the bullet!
