the best thing to do is to have the core replaced. thats where the unsolder the "Tanks" the side parts and solder in a new center... while your at it you might want to ask them to replace it with a 5 row(i believe the stock radiators are 4 row) adding a 5th row aids in the radiators ability to cool the radiator water. any full service radiator shop should be able to do this...
one of the guys here in CA had his radiator re-cored with a 5 row core for around $300 i think
I just had the radiator re-cored on my '94 DI last month . The fellow that did the job said that the tubes in the orig. core were to corroded to fix . I paid $625 for the job and the guy told me that even though the capacity of the radiator is large , the tubes were smaller then the re-core...so better flow now.
On your radiator they may be able to straighten out the fins , but you should have a shop pressure test it to see where you stand . Good Luck

Yup $625 for a re-core in Hawaii...After I found a full service shop that would look at it.
I usually get my parts online from mainland distributors...Less expensive and quicker then LR of Honolulu ( the only store in town) . Only recently have you seen more people start to drive Land Rovers here...they recently expanded the dealership here and I would think that most that I see are leased , or military personel new to Hawaii The cost of living in Paradise I guess .
Blue , ask yourself if you want to trust some shit like that out on BFE by yourself. Youw ant teh Disco to be jsut as reliable as it was before all this happened. Get some new shit and forget it....
Well, I've had a good number of radiators recored over the years, as long as the tanks are in decent shape (and a good shop can answer that) I wouldn't hesitate to trust a recore from a reputable shop.
Related to this thread, I always use distilled water to mix my coolant.
A recore done by a decent shop is fine. However , you aint really gonna know if that was the case till it fails , right ? For ole Blue here , if it fails , it just might kill him.... He aint jsut fucking around in someones back yard and he goes out quite a bit alone... AZ has some deolate areas..................
I'll explore the recore route and make an executive decision. What's a good price on brand new OEM radiator? I've decided that I'd rather go with my trusty old radiator with a recore that I oversee than trust someone else's old radiator pulled from a junker.
We bought a Radiator (aforementioned site) from there for my little sisters GMC Jimmy after she ran into a cow. Long story. Good customer service and communication. I tried putting in Land Rover and it says its a difficult fit (go figure). Good luck Blue. Melissa

1/3 what you'd pay at the dealer... you mean to tell me LR changes $2,100 for a radiator?!?!?! not saying i doubt that... as we all know LR charges and arm and a leg... but that seems extreme

well in any event... to answer the original question posted....
"Radiator Salvageable?" three answers...
1. i think we can all agree... No, eventhought the core has not been breached its prolly not a good idea to use it... especially if as Kyle puts it... that Blue goes off into the "wild" far away from help.... im sure the damage that the core has seen, has only weakend it
2. buying brand new is always "best case" scenerio, but becasue LR parts tend to be EXPENSIVE re-coreing is a good substitue
3. Yes, most of us would suggest saving the "tanks" and having it re-cored.

I just recored mine a couple of months back, Natarad 5 core was $360 AUD, new LR was $545 AUD. I changed every hose at the same time another $200. Another point to look at is if your car has a black plactic resevoir tank, change this as well these are known to split on the seam, the replacement ones are a sort of white colour and don't break or so they say, tanks cost $150 AUD for LR part.
