i am going to drop my gearbox out when i replace a rear main but i want to check out the diff lock while i am at it..please help! we have only just bought the car

OK... basically...
You have a vacuum switch fed by a take off at the back of the engine. On the switch you have 3 pipes. 1 comes from the engine, the other 2 go to the diff lock actuator. 1 sucks whilst the other does nothing. Pulling or pushing the switch basically swaps the sucking motion from 1 pipe to the other. The actuator is attached to a fork which in turns slides the differential selector back n forth. (engage or disengage).

The hiss you hear could be the diaphragms in either the switch or main actuator. (bell type thingy!) or a disconnected or fractured pipe.

Hope this helps!
