I figured I would give a go at correcting the rear windows on my D1. My son loves the darn thing and, well...neither of the rear windows go up or down. And when we left school today he tried to wave at his friends with the window up. So tomorrow I have some free time and I am going to have a look at what the problem is. Side note... I have had many a Discovery both series I and II's. I also have a used unknown good BCU from my parts truck to see what that will accomplish.

Btw, since we really haven't seen much movement here on the board in regards to D1's and D2's, I thought I would add some info that may have gotten swallowed over the years.

My D1 is my daily driver, it's also an XD, has over 150k miles and is ready for more adventures. So, let's see what tomorrow brings.

You can swap some switches around to rule out a bad switch but, before you buy anything, there's a lot of wires to be checked. This diagram is for my 98 D1 however it should be the same for yours or very close. It's a little hard to see but if you zoom in it's legible. I have highlighted the important stuff. 6F1D8D3B-5BB9-4A61-A95A-5614C0A5BDE8.jpeg

Very likely to be some cold solder joints on the window ECU. See this thread about which joints to examine closely...

And here for some other places where the connectors pass through the board...

get a soldering iron, some flux, and solder. Not terribly difficult other than figuring out how to manipulate board to remove it from under the dash.

My 97 had a bad solder joint on the ECU. Once I had the board on my bench, it was easy to see and easy to fix. I will say having 3 hands would make removing and refitting the board much easier.

If both stopped working at the same time, then look at the connector that is inside the center console, all the way to the rear of the console. The wiring harness for both rear windows comes down the center of the interior under the center console, then has a connector that splits the harness at the rear of the center console. it is often kicked by children causing issues.

For other pre-GEMS NAS discos, the security system does not control the windows, non-NAS discos are different and the security unit does get its fingers into the window switches.

If anyone would like to give better (and likely more accurate) info on model differences *please* pipe up.
I seem to recall the 14cux was something like this:
  1. Pre-GEMS D1 (aka: 14cux/14cu, aka:OBD1/1.5):
    • Global/Export: Security module involved
    • NAS: Security module NOT involved
  2. GEMS D1 (aka: OBDII)
    • Global/Export: ??
    • NAS: ??
