Removing starter...

It appears as though one has to remove the turbo and maybe the downpipe to get access to the starter on a 200tdi 110. Is that the case? When I look under it I can barely see part of the starter and certainly can't get to all the bolts and/or wiring. Is replacing a starter on a 110 as involved as it appears?

Thanks!

I do not know about the 200 Tdi but the 300 you do not have to remove anything but maybe the intake hose to the turbo. It is tight and busted knuckles rule. Just make sure that you disconnect the battery first.

FWIW, which may be nothing, my Haynes shop manual that covers the 200Tdi doesn't mention removing any of that to remove the starter.

A very late answer... It is very hard to bet out. You need to disconnect the downpipe and pull the turbo heat shield and bracket. With a lot of swearing it can be fished up and out... Worst job on a 200TDI Defender. Personally I changed to a 2.5TD downpipe as it has a flange just past the turn. With that style, it becomes easy to remove the starter or work on the clutch slave cylinder.
