Rough Idle & interior tapping

Hey everyone,

I've had this problem with my 99 disco 2 intermediately vibrating when in gear at a stop. I have replaced the plugs/wire, valve cover gaskets, sump gasket, changing of all fluids, and run LR fuel treatment. I still get this vibration but it doesn't occur every time I stop, but most of the time. My tach seems to move slightly up and down when it happens.

Secondly, I hear this faint tapping sound which comes from the behind the center of the dash from below, but it seems to be noticeable when I stop, probably be cause I can't hear it b/c its faint. This also doesn't occur constantly!!

One other question I had has to do with the climate control. Even when the climate control is off I seem to get air flow from the vents?? Why would this be happening'?

I brought it to the dealer for the vibration at idle and they replaced my idler pully!! what a sucker.....

I appreciate any info before I take it to the deal and am bent over and passed around.

Patrick,
I also have a 99 D2 so I can relate a little.
First of all, on the pulley, there was a recall on them, I have had it done twice under warranty.
Have you looked into motor mounts? Just a thought.
For the tapping sound have you checked for an exhaust leak, this will make a tapping sound.
The other idea would be your engine may be carboning up, have you cleaned the induction system and flushed the motor. This is a pretty common problem with our engines, they carbon up start ticking and run like crap.
Good luck,
Mike J.

check out ian's thread labled "knocking noise" -- sounds like you have a simular problem. my D1 has the same symptoms, but it vibrates slightly while accelerating, but it's been doing it for about 8K miles --> pretty sure its a clogged cat or exhaust leak, just haven't really had time to check it out.

good luck.

When the car is accelerating i have not problem, it runs great. It just seems to have a round idle when at a stand still. I 've check vaccum hoses and everything.... Could it be the Mass air or some type of idle control. When the car is in park it looks like the engine shakes a bit, but the engine mounts seem to be in good condition. I experience no hesitation just vibration. I'm gonna check the exhaust system again and see if i can locate anything unusual.

Could it be the stepper motor thing i've read about??

thanks for the info

Rough Idle

I had a problem with a rough idle lately which i was able to grweatly reduce by cleaning the carbon build up gunk out of the T junction going to the PCV. Also I was advised to look at the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). It might need cleaning with some carb cleaner, that is compatible for O2 sensors. That I have not done yet as I am waiting for a new copper gasket to arrive but I will be cleaning and inspecting it.
That being said, the cleaning of the T junstion made a tremendous difference in the idle. Everyone who has ridden in the truck has commented on the difference.
