Greg, don't you have a really built Disco that you've had for a while? Or am I mistaking you for someone else?
These are the main differences as I see them between the RRC and Disco 1. BTW I have a '96 Disco 1 with a 5spd (and broken diffs, at the moment :-( )
- RRC has a viscous (limited slip, essentially) centre differential compared to the Disco1's open/lockable diff. They both have their advantages and disadvantages I guess. The RRC's is more "transparent" as you don't have to think about it, and it seems to work really well, although you can't totally LOCK it.
- RRCs after a certain year (1992?) had electronic traction control on the rear axle. This actually helps a lot and makes these trucks go pretty well off-road. Not a match for a locker but still, pretty nice. I have off-road tires on my Disco vs. my friend with normal tires on his Range Rover, but he can still go almost anywhere I can. I get him on ground clearance due to my lift, but for pure traction his truck amazes me.
- Many of the RRCs have air suspension which will probably break on you at some point. Switching to springs/shocks like the Disco would probably be the best choice.
- Range Rovers have less headroom than Discos and you can't get a 5spd, which are the only two reasons I have a Discovery instead. At a little over 6'3, I have to duck my head in the Range Rover.
