Running Rich?

'99 D1 in good tune. Drove 6,000miles this month, most at ~75mph, tailpipe shows deep-black deposits all of the time. When I stomp on it coming on an entrance ramp I often get that gray carbon-burning smoke at the top of 3rd gear. Normal for the 4.0?

Runs well, idles well, around 18mpg average, no measurable oil use in 6,000mile trip (synthetics) so it can't be too bad.

Is there a way to lean the mixture? New O2 sensors (70,000miles)? Adjustable? Do I need new parts (MAF sensor?). I'd sure like to avoid adding carbon deposits or overheating the CATs if possible.

Thanks,
