Seal question

I have a question.
My "not so bad" oil leak has become my "rather severe" oil leak-bad enough to finally see where it's coming from. Question is this...how difficult is it to change the front main seal? I was told at a shop in Chicago that it was only a matter of pulling the pulley and that it could be pressed in. Has anyone tried to do this? I'm a long way from home and I'd like to fix this before I head back this weekend. Also, are parts available from anyone other than a dealer?
Thanks,
Daniel

Yep, that's the way to do it. Just pull the fan, shroud, belt, & crank pulley, then pop the seal out. A 7/8" angled open-end wrench works great, but a seal puller will, too. Use a large deep socket to drift it back in, or tap it in directly if you've got a steady hand. Polish the surface of the pulley where the seal rides, & reassemble it. ~20min if you're slow. ;)

Steve,
Thanks for the info. I have a follow up.
What would be the fastest way to get a seal here to me? Dealer only or can I get it locally? Does the fan have to come off or just the shroud?
Also, what do you mean by "drift it in"?
Lastly, does the pulley have to go back on just where it came off?
I mean is it balanced?
As a point of referrence, I have changed my own water pump :D . That's about the
biggest job I have accomplished.
Thanks again,
Daniel

"drift", as in "drive". Commonly confused with "punch". It just means to use a tool between the hammer & the seal.

I don't know about sources for the seal.

Yes, the fan has to come off before the crank pulley can, and that pulley is keyed so it only goes on one way.
