Separating the T-Case from the Transmission

Does anyone know if it's possible to take off the T-case from the Transmission without taking down the transmission itself from the vehicle?
I must replace the back oil-seal of the manual transmission - it leaks badly.
Any tips, hints?

Thanks.

If you have an LT230 then yes (if an LT95 then it is one piece with the gearbox).

The T-case can be removed easily without removing the gearbox. The only problem is refitting it without damaging the seal (I assume this is the seal you are replacing). It is best to slide the seal over the mainshaft without fitting to the T-case, then line up the T-case, and fit the seal at the last minute.

another one.
What about refitting the selector handle? Is it difficult to refit it later?

Your leak might be from the seal around the output shaft of the transmission where it goes into the xfer case.

On (my Rangie) I took the brake drum off to reduce weight. The xfer case without the brake weights about 115 lbs. Its generally a 2 person thing as its awkward as well.

Putting the case into diff lock helps when remounting as you can turn the front or rear output shafts to move the input shaft slightly to get it aligned over the transmission shaft splines.

I unbolted the mounts from the frame - not the xfer case - and left them on. Easier that way.

If you can, build a mount like they suggest in the Workshop Manual. It will make removal and refit go MUCH easier and safer. I think I spent about an hour or two making mine, but you need cutting tools and a welder. I imagine a good fab shop could make it off the LR drawings for about $100 or so. To make the adapter sit on a floor jack just weld on a 1" x 3" piece of solid bar to the bottom.

The difference the adapter will make is tremendous. It will balance the whole assembly and reduce the chance of damaging seals, TC, or yourself.
