Sills - preventative maintenance?

So, looking at the door sills there are a number of holes all around, other than being used for the plastic strip retainers, what are the rest of the holes for? Ventilation to prevent moisture from building up? I just cleaned mine in preparation for slider installation, but I'm wondering if I should seal these altogether with some industrial silicone or something? Looks like the dirt and water are building up on the inside and I'm sure in time this will result in rust.

clean them out well and then fill the inside with waxyoil or similar rust proofing.

Make sure the holes are cleaned out. This will help them prevent rust, when they get blocked they rust out.

Are they on the door or body side.
Door holes are to let water drain away.
Silicone will eat your paint. :(

The body sills. You know, the ones that sliders usually hug? The ones you always see rusted up on old trucks when you open doors?

Looked at the holes. I would spray a under coating in and
around them. There is a zince coating you can use (welding shop will have)
that we used in the body shop that works really good.
