Squeal at low idle

Recent post on starting trouble lead to a problem with high pitched squeal at low idle (idling in drive at 600 rpm)

One reply said water pump going out. I believe that's about the location of the squeal. Anyone else have that problem? If so how will it fail? Not boom I hope.

Belt? I just replaced my water pump today due to a squeal but it was not high pitched; at least not in my opinion. High pitch makes me think of the belt. Does it go away after you speed up or does it stay constant while the vehicle is running?

Pour water on the belt when the engine is running, if it's the belt it will go quiet. If it's a pulley it will not.

It goes away evening idling IF in neutral where the rpm picks up to say 750rpm. Does sound more vacuum leak but I've been thru all the hoses I could find.

Joe.... this is sorta off-topic, but your rig idles at 600 rpms?

Could be 700, the unloaded idle is at 750 to 800 range on the analog gage.

In the old days we had a water pump lube that was a white milky fluid that stopped noise. Don't remember them this loud but never had a D1 before. I may try some of that. Also in the old days water pump failure was precursed by dripping under front of engine. That was an old self contained unit and not the front plate type I think this is.

Also, when trying to be sure it wasn't crankcase vent (or lack thereof), I used the
LR shop manual that says there is a crankcase vent filter on the top of the L valve cover under the throttle linkage. Not on my D1. Anyone else.

I had this happen on my disco. It is the water pump seal. I usually happens in cold weather, then goes away during the summer. Philippe at Roverland says "they all sing this way". If your water pump is not leaking at the weeper it is in good shape.
