Suspension - RR vs. Disco II

I have both a RR 4.0 SE 1996 and a Disco II. Both my wife and I love both vehicles but we really appreciate how the Disco "feels" when driving vs. the RR.

The RR feels very floaty. Now I know that its supposed to feel that way and that it will never drive like the Disco BUT is there any way to get it a bit "tighter" like the Disco II?

Thanks all!

The swaybar, shock settings and spring rate are all part of this. I would think the solution would be to go with adjustable shocks or stiffer springs (in your case real springs), new steering stabilizer etc...
Is the steering in good condition on the RR? Something else to look at.
Otherwise, I think it is just a factor of the way the two cars are engineered.

The reason the Disco feels tighter than the RR is ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement)
The only way to make your RR feel like a Disco is to fit ACE, not really viable though....

Just curious... Since he didn't say the DiscoII had ACE and since all of them do not come with ACE how can you come to this conclusion?

Well he did say DII and here they are ALL specd with ACE
If it is different in the US I stand to be corrected by the originator of the post.... ;)

I test drove a used 01 RR and a new 04 D2 before purchasing the D2. The D2 I purchased is coil sprung front and rear (No SLS, No ACE). My observation was that the RR series 2 with air suspension was softer and less responsive. Although the 04 D2 exibited more induced steering wander at highway speeds.

My 96 D1 with 3" lift and no sway bars is like riding on a camels back.

My 99 D-2 has ACE and SLS (both optional in the USA, and I cringe every time a light on the dash comes on) and it really does seem to help. The ACE tightens up what would be a spongy feel.
On the farm we have a large tandem axle dump truck with a steel flat bed that we haul lumber on, it has a SLS type rear suspension. It was a huge adjustment after having a sprung tandem for years. It still feels spongy to me. I know it is a bit of a stretch, but I feel that the ACE in the D-2 is what is correcting this.

my 2 cents

Repace the RR's shocks with Bilsteins, these alone will tighten everything up. This is a shadetree mechanic job.

Another way of tightening up the feel of an older truck is to replace the bushings.
This is a well equipped shop job. and expensive.
But I was really impressed with how my truck felt afterwards
