Technical help please

I have a 95 Disco and was driving about 50 and the tach died and the battery light came on. I made it home (about 2 miles) and opened the hood to take a look. There was a burned wire smell, but I could not notice anything shorn off or burned. Maybe I missed something? HELP!

First thing I would do is have your alternator tested...thats probably the problem...it makes a very raunchy smell

your alternator has definetly died... probably not smart to drive the truck, unless you have a autoparts store around the corner that can test the alternator. it is running only on battery power if the alt is dead, and that definetly won't last long. it will strand you, and a tow truck is the only thing that could help at that point...

Same happened to me a few months ago and I changed the alternator.
