Temperatures rising

Prior to a well deserved camping vacation with my family, I took it upon myself to get my 97 D1 ready for the trip. Trip was a rather short jont of approx. 150 miles to Big Basin State Park in the Santa Cruz (CA) mountains.
So I replaced all the radiator/heater hoses, flushed the cooling system and topped off all fluids (including the diffs)and was feeling pretty upbeat about the trip.

Everything was going fine until the temp gauge went to the "H" mark 15 miles from the park. This has never happened before and its never gone over half way. I road tested it a few days prior (150 miles @ 85F) with no indications of overheating.

After letting it cool of overnight, I turn on the ignition at it immediatly went to the "H".
Doing some "hill billy troubleshooting", I removed each electrical Temperature guage/sender connection one at a time and was able to narrow it down to what I believe is called either the Temp guage sender or the Coolant temp sensor. This "unit is a single wire connection and is adjacient to another electrical sensor near the water pump (on the intake manifold). It appear to have an internal short , so I was going to replace it.

Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? Any comments / recommendations are appreciated. I'm going to order a complete set of temp/ sending / sensor gauges but just wanted a few opinions or suggestions.

Thanks,
Fergy
