The end of a questionable LR4 run

Our 7+ year dance with our LR4 effectively ended when a women bumped into us while trying to cross an intersection. The damage was not visually too bad but with parts more scarce and auto body repair insanely high the result is the insurance companies are not willing to take any risk and willing to total what would have given us another 120k miles. The real shame is I don’t have the energy to take a risk on another one I don’t have known maintenance history on. These are too delicate and major engine issues are a real issue on these 3.0SC now.

Let them total it and buy it back. It will have a salvage title but there are insurers that will cover it. Most likely you'll get your rig back and they will cut you a check.

My son backed his Explorer into a tree. Damage was not that bad but it was considered totaled. We bought it back, received a check. Then a couple of years later someone hit him and we received another check....

It looks like driver door and front fender, is there more to it than that?

I would try not to let them total it, that seems crazy. If you are not willing to risk it on another vehicle, just fix the one you have now!

Spoke to nationwide Friday. They’re offering $23.5 I was bracing myself for $16-17k. They want $8.5 to buy it back. One problem is where the door hinges attach to the frame is bent and will require some fabrication. The other is getting panels/doors is a crap shoot and often arrive with damage themselves which makes the length of repair time very uncertain. If this was a second vehicle I wouldn’t car too much. I’m going to take the cash and cut my losses.

Good lord, I assume you took it to a shop for an estimate. What if they quote you 10k? Truck back and 5k in hand.... On the other hand I don't know your station in life. Maybe money isn't an issue.

That seems like a pretty good offer to me. It should also be a good find for someone at a salvage auction. If I was looking for a minor project I’d definitely try to follow it to auction. I’d do an “old school” repair and drive it.

So insurance is refusing to repair it? Your only choice is total loss and buy back? I'd be pissed off. I would make sure I new what it cost to repair and decide if I should threaten them with a lawsuit. I'd tell them they are about ready to lose my business forever.

I would contact my agent and make sure he is earning his keep by bartering with my insurance and the other person's insurance.

It looks like a good condition '16 LR4 w/ 120k on the odometer is worth about what they are offering. Try to get more if that is your choice

I would put in a few bucks and get a low miles single owner '16.

From your initial post, title of threas and the language used, it just seems you are afraid to buy another used LR4.

Take the money and run. Let them have it. The prices seem to be falling on them. That’s a good offer. You could take that 17 grand and buy a very similar truck for 12

More like 15k for a '16 with 120k + miles, not a common price though.

Don't forget if you are not doing your own work, likely min 5k of preventative maintenance.

Yep prices are down about 20% from last year.

No choice in the matter, long story but I tried.
