Tire Question

I currently thinking of buying (245/75-16) new tires, for my 98 Discovery. Any opinions on the BFG M/T tires? What are some other options?

Thanks

where i'm at right now, duh...
I have a set on my truck, and they're very nice in my opinion. They aren't obnoxiously loud or annoying going down the highway. They clean very nicely in mud, and do great in the rocky trails here in NV too.

I'm pleased with mine.

I just switched from 265/75/16 BFG ATs to 285/55/16 BFG MTRs on my D2...a world of difference. The MTRs grip so much better and they don't get completely clogged with mud as much like the ATs did.

I just put a set of 245/75 BFG AT KO's on my '97 and are wonderful. The ride is smooth and are not loud. I have had BFG MT's on other trucks and were alot more noisy. If you are going to do alot of wheel'n then the M/T's are a good choise, if not then go with the A/T. Just my $.02. ;)

so it sounds like a few folks are running 245/75/16's

curious are these on 7" wide steel wheels or 8" wide Alloys?

the "recomended wheel width for GY MTR's is 6.5 - 7.5" im contemplating putting 245's on a set of 16x8 alloys...

i've heard that because the 16x8 alloys exceeds the recomended rim width i will have problems with breaking a bead should i air down... has anyone had/seen this problem with the 8" rims vs 7" rims???

also i thought someone told me either the Trek or G4 outfitted trucks ran the 16x8's with 245's is there any truth to that???

I have had both, BFG M/T's and MTR's. In my opinion the M/T's are not even close to as good as the MTR's. The M/T's wore out in about 12-14K miles while the MTR's I have now have 25K and still have about 1/4 to 1/3 tread left. As far as noise, they are about the same.
As far as off road, the M/T's seemed to be better suited for mud and the MTR's for rock and loose dirt but they are very similar.
MTR's are a better all around tire.

Ken,

I have 245/75 16 BFG MT's on my 2002 Disco II with stock 8"x16" wheels and have not had any problems. I was concerned about this size tire on an 8" rim and checked with Paul Barsanti at Land Rover Redwood City (Calif) who participated in the Trek competitions. He said the Trek Discos were equipped with 245/75 16 BFG MT's on stock 8" rims. My assumption is that if they work on factory setups (over a couple of years) then there should not be a problem (still it's an assumption). I have not had the need so far to lower the tire pressure, so I can't comment on what would happen.

I was suprised at the low noise on the MT's (really !). It must be the relatively narrow footprint (75) or maybe something in the Rover design that keeps the noise low. MT's on other trucks can be very noisy.

Hopes this helps.

Im running the 245.75.16 MTRs on my 98 D1 and dont plan on running anything else until I get lockers and can regear. Then I will go a bit larger, but will stick with the MTRs. They are more of an all-terrain tire in my opinion, but are very on road friendly. Off road, they have been excellent in both mud and on rock. I do have the OME HD lift and you will need to cut the rear fenders if you plan on articulating. So, I say get the MTRs!

Thx for the input... i thought i remember someone saying that LR put 245/75/16 on their Trek Disco's. i just forgot it was Paul at LR Redwood City.

In any event Rich Loyde and Paul Brasanti are great guys! first LR dealership i feel comfortable going to! Last time i was over there LR RC Paul was showing me some pics of him and his co pilot at the Trek event... pretty interesting, they ran those guys all over the place... started out with them getting woken up PRE dawn, giving them some coordinates to where their rigs would be... once they got to it... they had to hunt for its TIRES which were spread around the surrounding forest... from there it just got more intense....

anyway, i will be putting my MTR's on a set of 16x8 LR alloys to go on my P38. ill let you know how they work!
