225-75/16 will fit. Depending on the brand and model of the tyre, it may rub under heavy loads while turning etc. The Dunlop Radial Rover RV will not, some of the BFG's do ok- and the Firestone Destinations will rip the plastic out from under your wheel wells.
Throw a DAP lift on it and it'll never rub. If you want more of a street tyre, look into the 225/70-16. There aren't any "off-road" tyres in that size, but some decent AT's.

The DAP lift is 2". It's not terribly difficult to do- it's about a 4 hour job. It's easier to do if you have air tools. Search the Freelanderliving.com site and there's an article there on how to do it.
The two things that suck about the installation- you have to cut a bracket on the rear brake line retainer and also cut a bit of metal to get the tie rods to clear at full droop.

235's can be kinda close to the strut on the inside, but if only going 70 aspect ratio you may be ok.

For NO rubbing under any circumstance- you'd have to stay with 225/70-16. Many people run 225/75-16's but will sometimes get a little rub under some conditions like hard cornering with a full load of rear seat passengers etc.
