Could someone explain to me how the Trailer light circuit works on a 98 D1? I Originally replaced my flasher relay and it was a 3 pin. The socket had 4 pins. So I bought a 4 pin relay for a D1 with towing package. The 4 pin relay does not fit in the relay socket. So I made my own harness for the relay socket so I could use the 4 pin relay I bought. My blinkers now work however on the dash I get a sometimes flashing trailer light in tandem with the blinker. What is this light for? Why doesn't the replacement relay fit in the socket? Why does the light sometimes flash? My D1 has trailer wiring but I don't have anything hooked to it.

The trailer light on the dash lights up for the first blink of every turn signal.

Okay, I read that somewhere else too. Mine blinks about 5 times then goes out without anything hooked up to the trailer plug, maybe that's a wiring issue. But my bigger issue is that this is a 4 pin socket and the replacement 4 pin relay doesn't fit. Maybe I need to pony up for the real expensive lucas oem relay.

This 4 pin relay is not an universal relay. The only one relay we found that runs the same way as original one is the expensive genuine. It blinks trailer (4th pin) the first time from all blink signals, and permanently when more lamps are hanging in the blinker line (for instance when trailer is connected).

Thank you, that answers it. I had a bad ground I fixed and now my blinker and trailer light blink all the time with the replacement universal 4 pin. Eurospare is who supplies the replacement 4 pin and it’s universal and doesn’t fit. I will just pony up for the oem expensive relay.
