Transmission failure?

Well...I think mine may be gone, too. I was on my way home the other day in my Disco (2001, 75k miles) and my service engine light came on. 50 miles later the ****** made some whirring noises and stopped.

Had it towed to a local shop and they read the code - P0741. Torque converter lock-up clutch fault. They did a ****** service and transfer case service and cleaned all the electrical connectors and re-greased them. Reset the code and road tested. All looked good.

I got it back and made it about 10 miles when the light returned. 30 miles later it was slipping pretty bad but I limped it into my driveway.

Has this happened to anyone here? Torque converter? Transmission? Maybe just replace the MV3 selenoid valve? rzracer - is this the same type of thing that happened to you???

Thanks,

Pat

For my DII, the service engine soon light was on, but I lost all forward gears completely.
As I drove the rpm started climbing and my speed decreased until I coasted to a stop. Tried switching to 1,2 to no avial.
I'll ask service tomorrow what fault code(s) were present.

O'boy.. from the frying pan... into the fire...!!

I just bought a 2001 Disco.. Exactly 50K on it...
Not sure of maintance of transmission... All appears to
be ok with all of the running gear.... But, I hope all of
these transmission failures are uncommon events...
I just traded my 1994 Trooper in Monday for it..
The Trooper's transmisson totally self destructed
last Friday evening... on Interstate 95... So based
on LR's reputation I wanted a reliable replacement...
If the Disco's transmission dies.. I best find a safe
place... my wife's sense of humor.. will be tested... ;)

Walt: I too have noticed a few threads rapidly appearing about ****** failure. Nonetheless, see it as an anomaly that they are all appearing at the same time for any given reason and next week we could see more posts on maybe fuel pump failure which is more so a common problem. You should be safe with the new truck, provided you got your records from the dealer and researched the past history of the truck? If not Curtis has a 'new to you' ****** for sale in the parts section which I am 100% sure has been serviced with care. ;)

Brian: Keep us posted as your predicament unravels. I am interested to hear what type of recompense (if any) is offered in your particular situation.

Pat: Have you been towing anything out of the ordinary? When you say service was it a flush or just filter/fluid change on the ******?

If yours is like mine, you shouldn't worry about it just yet. My transmission was fine at 50k. Of course, at 50k I was getting a new engine put in it. :D

I don't tow anything at all...I have been up to the hood in water several times over the years, though, but I've always had regular maintenance done on it.

The 'service' that the shop did was a filter/fluid change. Not sure if they flushed it. And I'm not sure why they didn't replace the MV3 selenoid valve while they were in there...

Why does the abbreviation for the word 'transmission' get ***** out??? Some sort of browser setting?

Thanks..

Your right... next week it'll be some other problem...
I have the service records and had a carfax on it
only turned up a brake surging problem and a problem
rotor... Nothing really.... I'm just going to enjoy driving
the Disco and not worry about it... Thanks Again.. :D
