Transmission overheating, drained 2 gallons?

Hi I test drove a 94 D1 in which I replaced the engine after the original one blew. Anyway, the transmission was very smooth and quiet, but over about 10 miles it began making more and more noise and the trans temp warning light came on.

I drained out about 2 gallons of black oil, dropped the Y and cross member and took off the filter, which didn't look too bad but its hard to tell.

1. First question is: Doesn't only 1 gallon normally drain out? Thats what some people have told me. Was it over-filled and could that cause it to overheat?

2. Could the blown engine have damaged the transmission significantly in any way? Heat?

3. Any other checks that I should do? Has anyone had a blocked radiator or cooling line? The only thing I can think of is if I left a plug of tissue paper in one of the pipes! Is there a good way to test the radiator? The engine temp was just slightly lower than mid-point.

Thanks for any help.

Just serviced my transmission. Added 5.5 ltrs of ATF to the transmission to achieve correct fluid level. To check the clogged radiator, remove both oil cooler pipes from the radiator and blow air in the top one and check if the air flow out of the lower connection is acceptable. You can also do that to both oil pipes. Loosen both ends, from transmission side and radiator side and blow air and check for any restrictions.

sounds like a lot

just serviced my DII - 10.* quarts is capacity i believe and i only got out about 5. 4 quarts to a gallon? but why would adding too much overheat it? i would just add new fluid to the proper specs and see what happens.

Sven,

Are you SURE they share the same light? That would make some sense as the noises I could hear and the roughness seemed to be more at the transfer box than the transmission. Maybe its dry?

No, I drained 2 gallons, not 2 quarts.

SO now I'm thinking because the transmission was still changing fine, that the noise was from the t-case instead, maybe its empty. I'll do some more tests and a road test, etc. Thanks.

Hmm, its odd that I only get about 1 gallon out of the D2. Ended up being a real pain when I got water in it once and had to change it 10 times in 1 day!
