Being fairly computer illiterate, I need some help in connecting a WIFI card to my wife's laptop. She has an older IBM thinkpad with Windows NT. The WIFI card I'm trying to setup is the Microsoft MN520 (802.11b). The problem is that the software doesn't work with Windows NT. Does anyone know of a creative solution to my situation?

Thanks in advance,

I don't know if this helps at all, but at home when we were setting up our wireless stuff we had to download a few programs for it to actually work that were not on the computer. You could call microsoft and talk to them, I had to call dell for them to set it up, which did not take too long since the guy was from america.

Mike, i hate to tell you , but you toast.

There is no NT driver for it - at least thats what Microsoft says in their own release.

# Windows XP Home
# Windows XP Professional
# Windows 2000 Professional
# Windows Millennium Edition
# Windows 98 Second Edition
# Windows 98

are only ones that covered.

You can try to install 98 drivers , but most likely it wouldnt work.

I'll be honest.. you'll be hard pressed to find any new technology which will support NT. Depending on the laptop specs (you just said 'older') , you might be able to upgrade to Win2K.

Oh come on.. NT 4 was really good for its time. Heck it was very good till 2000 came along and got first initial batch of bugs fixed.

Drivers always were pain in a**e though.

Changing the operating system really isn't an option, since its my wife's work laptop. She's not allowed to install a new operating system. It looks like she's stuck at 56K.

Actually, if your goal is to just get her onto your wireless network, there are other options if she already has a ethernet port in the laptop (or an ethernet pcmcia card.)

This option will not allow her to wander around the house wirelessly, but if you just want her to be on the network (say with the router in another room or on another floor), it'll work. Basically, you get a DWL-810 (or DWL-G810,etc), or any 'wireless bridge', and configure it to your wireless networks's settings (ssid, wep, etc). Connect her laptop via the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on the bridge, and you're all set. People do this all the time when they want to hook up their playstations to their wireless network.

Oh, and the NT in Windows NT does stand for 'New Technology'. :)
I still run NT on a few of my servers.. no reason for me to change.

Tommy, its kind of ironic that you mention that. I just bought a Linksys WGA54G to play Xbox on XBconnect.com and I just returned it because it's easier to hook the xbox up through my laptop using a crossover cable. I guess I need to go back to the store again. :D
