Hey All

i just got a LR winch mount for my 01 P38 HSE... (I posted in the RR section but i have a general question about Solonoids, placement and Heat issues, please read on...)

i got it used so it doesnt have any instructions... BUT it seems pretty simple. one MAJOR thing that bothers me is that i will have to cut to holes in my air damn...

to put it plainly... cutting up my new baby scares the SHIT out of me... not to mention if i F it up my Wife will KILL ME....

all the pics i've been able to find on the web suck... to dark... to far... etc...

does anyone else have this setup???? can you PLEASE post some close ups on how and where you had to cut your air damn...

WINCH AND TRAY quesions:

1. on the back of the winch tray there are two bolts... is the factory A frame predrilled for these holes? I.E. behind the plastic/rubber covering are there already holes?? or will i have to Drill them myself??

2. What do these brackets mount to on the truck and where do they connect to on the winch setup?

3. Can someone please post or send me some pics of your installation. it would be VERY helpfull...

4. also where did you hide the solinoid thing????

SOLONOID PLACEMENT questions:

In looknig for a place to put the solonoid i found this "mystery cubby hole/space under the battery cover....

Battery%20lid.jpg

1. does anyone know what this is for????

2. it looks like it has a "pass through" for the cables

3. does anyone know what the "offical" use of this space is????

4. if a take the cover off of the solonoids i can just BARELY squeeze them into the space.

im not sure how safe this is for the solonoides as the only ventalation they will get is from the sides (i.e. the top and the bottom of the solonoids will be sandwiched between plastic) in any event there will be plenty of air space around them... just not on the top and bottoms. how hot do solonoids get durring use????

if heat is an issue i suppose i could always remember to pull the battery cover off prior to winching right?

thx

Not sure about the actual mounting of the winch, you will have to find the installation guide or someone to take pictures of their mounting w/ the same bumper/winch combo.

As for the solonoid.. that is a good place as any, just make sure there is some ventilation, these don't generate tons of heat, unless you do prolonged winching. Not a bad idea to keep them out of the weather... The piece of advice that I have is to make the runs of cable to battery & winch as short as possible, the longer the run, the more power loss & heat generation... Make sure the ground connections are to the frame rail too..

I don't know anything about how a P38 bumper is constructed. But on the D1 factory winch mount those two bolts go through the bumper. Yhe center plastic is removed, (and may even have been held on by bolts going through similar holes in the bumber. Those two braces then go behind the bumper and one end qattaches to the same olts discussed above, and the other end goes to one of the frame bolts. At least that is the way it worked on a D1 factory winch mount.

Good luck.

Keep a couple things in mind.
Lead/acid batteries generate hydrogen (remember the Hindenberg?) fumes when charging.
I've seen faulty winch solenoids get red hot and melt.
