i've search on this for a bit. keep getting either wire it to 12v lighter or direct to battery. i want to do a direct to battery but not sure how to go about it? i know its probably a simple task but i've never worked on a disco before.

can someone give me a some advice on the best place to connect power and ground and how to route it? thanks for any help!

I'm not certain on your truck but my 2000 d2 has an opening on the right side of the fire wall.
Pull the trim panel under the glove box and you should see it.
I've used this to pull many a wire through the fire wall.

If you're going to run the wires thru the firewall there are many potential grounding points...same holds true for inside the cabin...either tap into an existing ground wire or find a metal screw touching a metal surface...

The best place to ground a cb is to the battery to keep noise to a minimum. Same holds true with the power.
Wiring any where else may not be noisy but why take a chance.

This is how I wired it on my '95.
I mounted my control box up on the plastic overhead thingy the visor attaches to. For power I ran a #10 (maybe a #12) wire to a 60amp blade fuse holder mounted on the fender inside the engine compartment, near the washer resovoir. I then ran from that down under the Rover and up through the floorboard (there's a small rubber plug under the passenger seat you can remove and replace with a grommet). I then ran the wire under the center tunnel to up under the cubby, where I mounted a 10 slot fuse panel. I then took a 4 conducter flat trailer wire and ran from 3 (one conducter is the ground) of the fuses along under the tunnel cover, behind the dash and up the A pillar behind the trim (I ran three so I can put other electronics up there). While I was at it, I installed an additional lighter in the tunnel on it's own fuse, and rewired the stock one to the new fuse panel, so they are both always on.
For the Coax cable, I had to remove my dash to fix the heater, I ran the COAX down the A pillar behind the trim, drilled through the firewall, put in a grommit, and ran it out through there, then routed it out to the front bumper where the antenna is mounted.
The 60amp fuse is fed from the winch battery.
