..for membership to DWeb ? Let's say that free membership was available, but allowed only limited access and privileges. Would you pay for expanded privileges ?

"Since we hate pop up ads as much as you do, advertising is not a viable resource revenue for Discoweb. We have made a conscious decision to keep the site ad free, and have no plans to introduce ads anytime in the foreseeable future. Instead, we rely on support from the people who actually use the site.

The money you donate will be spent to defray the cost of operating DiscoWeb, and will help to ensure that DiscoWeb stays available and ad-free.

Thank you for your support.

Axel, Ho and Kyle. "

It'll get there. You have to remember that there are other things going on in the admin's lives than just maintaining D-web. Paying for it would just make Ho and the fellas into professional D-web computer geeks, rather than Land Rover geeks with a side of computer. Or they'd become CEO CFO CAO of D-Web Industries LLC, and then the board would be derided for being corporate drivel, and ultimately sued out of existence by Ford for making money off the LR name.

keep it in the neighborhood, even with the instability.

Honestly, I think my vote would be somewhere between 2,3 and 4. I would pay more than $15 if it was reliable and I had all access ....it's certainly saved me much more than that each year on our Rover maintenance...but since things have been so shaky, I find myself searching here less and less.

I have missed Dweb though! ;)

Although the site may seem "Shaky" its actually not. When you dont see it here its because I closed the port. The server and the systems running on it are running just fine. The issue now is a data center to stick it in. We have had many volounteers and many who say they can get us a "Good deal". The issue with that is that the site eats up assloads of bandwidth and I dont think the hosts every really apreciate just how much. This has been our issue all along . At the first data centers where the site was on their box and then later after we had our own box.
We want to keep the site up just as bad as you all want it up. BUT , I dont want to have to go dicking around moving it every time we use as much pipe as I said we were going to use in the first place and the host wants to raise rates to something we simply cant afford to keep throwing at it.
We were using 750 KBS at the 95th percentile when we had the old BBS system. I think that will be signifigantly reduced with the new system , but as the site gets older and is around longer the membership is just going to rise and the traffic will eventually come right back to where it was before.
What does all this mean ? Well it means that we are looking for a data center thats local to the MD, DC , NOVA that can give us a decent rate for what we need and not underestimate our useage. Alot of people give you "Unlimited" plans or cheap rates because they really dont forsee you using that much pipe . The rate is nice but its short lived. What we really want is a permenant home at a fair price. If anyone knows of anything let me know. As it stands , we have one guy that says he will do it pretty cheap , I am skeptical for the above reasons , and I am waiting for a quote back from the company that handles Sony.
Dont go thinking the site is up and down for any other reason aside from me turning it off and on. When its down its by choice and will remain that way until we can get it a good home.

Why a poll?

Why to have a poll at all? Just tell what will it take to keep it running, and everyone will sort it out to him/herself whether it's worth it.

OTOH.. as much as I dislike the concept of paid trip participation (Bill Burke or others'-style), this can be another source. Say, we pay something to go to Rover Rendezvous, despite being able to do the same for free.

Paying for trips, fudraisers etc, i think is a better idea then paying for membership. I will chip in 5 or 10 for a guided ride with Ax or someone through the pineys or other park etc. And merchandise. i could use a shirt or 2. If everyone paid commision on sales too wouldbe a good start.

"oh... there's a 7-Eleven down the road!"

Iwould pay in a hard beat, $15 a year? even more $25? seems fair, and it would be a good idea to get organizad, and like lost in boston said fundraising, and stuff like that, there's many of us that would be more than willing to get involved, if you want to go this way, count me in, cheers
