Check out www.azvjc.org under "Trips" for the details. I went with Cliff a few weeks back, but broke down (starter problems) part way in. Cliff and Terry towed me out at the end of the day...great guys! And we had a great time despite my mechanical difficulties. Last time we had everything from a lifted Toyota pick up to a stock Jeep Grand Cherokee. There is usually a random assortment of vehicles on the trip. It is great to see how different vehicles perform on this trail.

My starter problems are (hopefully) fixed and I have a new 3" lift with some 245/75s that I am dying to try out.

Do you guys know about the 4x4 park behind Prescott? i think it is called Alto. I haven't been there in a few years so I don't know what it is like now. But we used to have fun all day long wheelin up some really tough hills. We would bring our dirt bikes and quads also. But there is some awesome views if you can get to the top of some of those hills.

Haven't heard of it...but I am pretty new to wheeling around here. Is it worth the trip? How do you get there?

It's worth the trip if you bring extra toys like a quad or dirtbike. I haven't been there in a while so I don't know what it is like any more. There are some really tough hills to climb if your into the really technical stuff. It is mainly a mix of sand, rock and crushed granite. It may be worth a day trip to you. there is a camping area there also. To get there you follow iron springs road right out of the backside of Prescott. It is on the right approx. 5-15 miles after you leave Prescott you should see signs. I'll be in Arizona in April and I can make a quick run of it and check it out.

Jess,

We did the run on Saturday. There was one Disco, one stock Suburban, one 84 Chevy P/U, one Nissan P/U, three Jeep Cherokee Sports and thirteen Jeep Wranglers of various ages and abilities (including two Rubicons). The trail was quite a bit rougher than when I ran it in late January. The rain did a fair amount of damage. I had absolutely no troubles with navigating the trail, although my alternator did its best impression of spontaneous combustion about two thirds of the way in (we were actually lucky to get out...I had just put in a new HD battery last month). Lots of smoke and melted black stuff oozing out of it. Probably a good sign it is in need of a little TLC.

Of the four more difficult optional paths along the trail, we did two of them without problem. Didn't attempt the other two (the staircase was particularly bad and only four of the vehicles made it - all had big lifts/tires and/or lockers).

There were too many vehicles for my liking...10 seems to be a good number. It took us 10 hours to get to Crown King with all the stops. We did have a phenomenal time though and most of the people that came along were great...some were getting a little testy when things were taking longer than they liked. It was perfect weather as you got the gamut of sunny and warm to dark and cool.

There is that one big step that you have to navigate along the south side of the creek (where you are about 100 feet up hanging on the side of the mountain and leaning sidways towards the creek) that posed the biggest challenge for the vehicles. At least half of them high centered or scraped a front or rear bumper, but still made it over. We had to winch one Jeep up because she had lost her 4 wheel and we had to stack rocks for the Suburban and use a tow strap to pull it over. I made it without any contact, but I did drop my right rear wheel off the side a little right after the step, as there is a large dinosaur egg that forces you to the edge. It is was a little unnerving to hear part of the road tumbling down the cliff as you are driving over it.

Once we hit the pine trees, it was all snow and slush. There were some good deep puddles along the way too. The snow on the sides of the road was about 2 feet deep. The road itself had had enough ATV and 4 wheel traffic that you could stick to the tracks without any problems (i.e., no plowing with the diff). Only one vehicle lost it in the snow and did a little bumper/grill/hood damage after having a disagreement with a tree.

How did the C-Gap run go?
