I've got a 96 Disco and it has a pretty strong gas smell. I am pretty new to working on vehicles. What should I check? Should I be concerned?

I had that happen and it was a faulty gas cap...

I can smell it in the cab. It seems to be coming from the gas tank area but I can't pinpoint it. I did see some small cracks in the hose going from the tank to the filling opening(not sure what it's called),however, they only seem to be on the surface and not all the way through. There are no signs of leaking anywhere except for the smell. Can you believe that no leaking anywhere of any fluids on my truck, YET!

Jeremy,

You know what they say, "if it isn't leaking better check the oil" lol. Did you figure out the voltage regulator yet?

I have the same gas smell with no evidence of leaking and would like to know what it is. I can smell it when standing behind the truck most times, and in the truck on occasion. That is my excuse for why I get 10 miles to the gallon.

My 94 Disco also have a gas smell but it was coming out from the back of the car, apparently the back door was loose so when I tighten it up no more gas smell.

That's not really a close approximation to reality is it Jeremy, if you can smell gas in the cab:)

Sniff around the back carpet area in the middle. If its really bad, pull up the carpet and check the fuel pump seals. The access port is just under there.

I already checked under there Dean. Everything is fine in there. I actually can't really smell it from the fuel pump. I think it is not coming directly in the cab. The smell is the strongest from the back but it seems to be on the outside of the truck coming in. I still don't think it should smell as strong as it is. I'll try tightening the door and see if that is it, but it's still too strong on the outside.

I've noticed that if I fill mine up fully and then go off road. Some trucks (I've heard)have a charcoal vapour filter of some kind that when saturated (by overfilling and then shaking all around) can hold gas and would then smell.
Also, I noticed on my truck if I just give the cabin positive air pressure it goes away pretty much.

I had a similar issue. It turned out to be a gasket on the exhaust manifold -- somewhere down where the manifold takes a sharp angle turn before heading into the cats I believe. It smelled worse in the back seat area than in the drivers seat.

Mine has a crack in the filler tube just as it goes into the fuel tank. Tried repairing it several times but I guess I'm using the wrong stuff becuase the repairs haven't lasted too long. Anyway, it leaks while filling and if the tank is full it will keep leaking until the level gets below the filler tube.

I'd check that crack while filling with fuel and make sure it doesn't leak then. Also it doesn't have to be leaking fuel to give off the odor. Any crack, bad seal, or opening in the fuel system will give off the smell even tho it isn't pouring out on the ground.

I have a 97 Disco and had a strong gas smell from the back and into the cab. Turned out to be one of the vents (there are four)in the gas tank had popped out. I drove the car until the tank was past 'Empty' and dropped the tank and glued the vent back into place and reinstalled the tank. This was over a year ago and no more problem.
