Okay, need a bit of help on a diagnosis here.... this is on a '95 Disco.

With the headlights off, hit the brakes, all the brakelights light up well, the way they are supposed to do.

Now, turn the headlights on. Except for the 3rd brakelight, everything is fine, the taillights are on; then, hit the brakes, and the lights brighten correctly. Except...

The odd thing is the 3rd brake-light itself, there on the back door. When you turn the headlights on, it also comes on. When you hit the brakes, it cuts off as the rest of the brakelights brighten.

Odd, eh? Definitely a Lucas-issue of some sort.

What's going on? I was suspecting a ground, but, that would make me think that that light wouldn't work at all. I thought that it was something in the brakelight system, but, they all work fine with the headlights off.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Sounds as if the third light wiring might be crossed with the running lights. All wiring for the rear door runs thru the right side in the rear with the rear lights. Might want to remove the rear lights access cover and check to see if any wiring is rubbing/chafing or has been tied together in that location as a jump off point.
FWIW.

I don't know about a 95 but if that 3rd light is supposed to light up with the running lights and get briter with the breaks then you would need a double filiment bulb. If you changed the bulb recently and used a single filiment bulb you would get exactly what you described.

Sounds more like the filiment on one of the other lights has shorted against the other side..
