Hi, I am looking at getting into the world of Land Rover. I have always admired their off road capability and looks. I used to own a Jeep Wrangeler with minor mods and have done some off roading which I love. I want to own another vehicle that I can commute with and take off road on the weekends. I am looking at buying a used Discovery II within 8-12 months and wanted some opinions on the best year to buy based on reliability, price, off road capability, etc. Based on this, I am also looking for opinions for the best off road mods to make. I am planning on getting a winch and all the recovery tools and the largest off road tires I can put on without a lift. Thanks for any opinions. |

1999-2001 cause you can lock the center Diff. other than that they are the same. |

Early '01. Mid year they switched to the x-fer case that can't be locked. To be safe, stick with '99 or '00. I've got an '00 and love it. Look in my gallery to see what can be done to one. Don't listen to the DI guys. A DII is VERY capable. (Oh boy. I've opened the can of worms now!) |

Hey, I'm a DI owner... ...and even though the DI looks better and has a better length for off-roading - I wish I had traction control!! I have the '65 IIa when I want to go Old School. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |
